finding my voice
My name is David, but most people know me as A.V. I’m twelve now, but I’ve lived a lifetime of experiences already. I started rapping with my friends—Solis, Mr.K, Rod, and L.Z. We called ourselves C.D. Music was our escape. I told them my uncle made music, and that pushed us to start writing songs together. We weren’t famous or anything, but we had a dream, and for a moment, it felt like nothing could stop us. Then I moved. Not far, but far enough to switch schools. I didn’t want to leave them behind, but I had no choice. I kept writing songs, though—songs about us, about love, about heartbreak, about everything I couldn’t say out loud. Music became my therapy. I didn’t write because I was bored—I wrote to survive. Last year, I made some bad choices. I got into drugs. But one night, it almost killed me. I overdosed, and for five minutes, I was gone. I saw a light… something reaching for me, like it was pulling me toward it. I didn’t grab it. I woke up later, and my mom was there. I thought she hated me, but she didn’t. She said she was sorry, and I told her, “It’s not your fault.” That moment stayed with me. It reminded me I wasn’t alone. I started meeting new friends—PJ, JTI, JR—people like me, who didn’t need drugs to escape. We became family. But life doesn’t make it easy. On October 25th, something happened I’ll never forget. My best friend died in front of me. I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t save him. And for months after, I barely slept. I carried that memory everywhere. But slowly, I started to heal. I wrote more. I started a podcast with my new friends called Square One, where we shared our stories, our pain, our triumphs. We weren’t outcasts—we were a family of outcasts. Eventually, we started a garage band and built a “community” around our music. It went viral. We became famous, but more than that, we became a family that mattered. Every year, we celebrate our journey together—a night just for friends who are real, who understand what it’s like to be alone and misunderstood. That’s our world. That’s my story. And I’m just getting started.
