“Please just drop it Meg” Garret angrily hissed under his breath
“Not until you tell her, it’s completely unfair, she deserves to know” Meg hissed back just as angrily
“I am not going to tell my best friends widow that I’m in love with her okay, and besides she seems happy with Dr douchebag and I’m not ruining that for her. She deserves to be happy” he ran his hand down his face in exasperation.
“You playing the hero is exactly how we got here in the first place Garret. I’m not letting it go this time” Meg folded her arms and glared at him.
“What do you mean this time. You didn’t let it go the first time. If you remember correctly we had a huge argument with you telling me to go to London and declare my love for her even though I was already seeing Elise, like this was all some sort of romance novel. I wish I had never told you anything about it when she left” he blew out an angry breath.
“What are guys fighting about” I asked as I put a tray of dirty glasses on the bar in front of them.
“I’m trying to convince Garret to stay with me and Cheryl up in the apartment. Sleeping on the office couch is making him grumpy and I’m sick of letting him in every night just to shower”
“I’m sorry about you and Elise, Garret. Is there really no way for you guys to work it out” I asked
It had been a couple of weeks since they broke up and Elise had quit her job at the bar.
“You could always come stay with me” I offered.
Meg chuckled “I think that’s a great idea”
He shook his head “Thanks for the offer Elle but I’m going to pick the rest of my stuff up tomorrow and accept Megs offer of the spare room until I can find a place of my own” he glared at Meg.
That’s a funny way of accepting an offer. I didn’t say anything more and went back to work leaving them to their argument.
Late that evening as things were winding down for the close of night Meg suddenly looked at me confused “It’s Friday, what are you doing here and not on date night with Dr Dashing”
“Dr Douchebag” Garret interjected
I rolled my eyes at Garret and looked back at Meg to answer her.
“We had the ‘where is this going’ talk a couple weeks ago. He just sprung it on me and I wasn’t ready to have that conversation with him” I let out a huge sigh before continuing “I asked for some time to think it over. I don’t want a relationship. I can’t love him. My heart belongs to somebody else” my eyes slid to Garret and quickly back to Meg. “I need to tell him but now he’s avoiding me”
“Oh and you’re leaving for your brothers wedding next week. You need to talk to him before then Elle” Meg gave me a comforting pat on the back.
The last of the customers called out their goodnights and left. I walked away from the bar to lock the doors up behind them and started cleaning their table up.
“Well I definitely can’t tell her now” Garret sighed sadly to Meg
“Why not?”
“Didn’t you hear her? She can’t love anyone. Her heart belongs to Derek”
