MAYA'S POV
The nerve of this guy to come and talk to me about my grandmother's assets right now!
"Why are you even talking about that right now! Your mother, my grandmother, was just buried 2 minutes ago. What is wrong with you?" I whisper yell, moving out of the way towards the back of the house, I need some air. All those people gathered in the ball room are suffocating me.
"Where do you think you are going?" My uncle stops me when I am almost at the exit. He holds me by the wrist, quite painfully, I may add. I pull away from him with all my strength, and he lets go. I continue my path, but he is right behind me.
"Listen, you little slut, while you were away fulfilling your dreams of being independent and go to college, I stayed here taking care of everything for her, following her every command, listening to her, rant about how you were making all the wrong choices, sleeping around with different guys and not caring enough to come back and stay working for her. So yes, she is gone, and you will not stand in the way of me taking over. Everything is mine! Your mother lost all her rights when she married your father, a looser who didn't belong in our circle." His voice is full of venom, his blue eyes have evilness, he is trying to contain himself, his face is red and looks like he is about to burst.
"You listen, first of all, it is nobody's business who I sleep with. second, if you think that a woman like Eloise Devereaux would not make a will to protect her estate from people like you, then you are more stupid than you look." I tell him, trying no to yell, turning around. I don't want anyone to know about our family spat.
"This isn't over, you stupid girl...." I don't even know where he came from, but Blake suddenly comes in pushing Chad to the wall from his neck.
"I had enough of your insolence. It is no wonder why Eloise wanted you as far away as possible from her. You will leave Mya alone and you are going to quietly turn around and go home, because if you don't, I am going to make sure that everyone in that room knows what a douchebag you are, and your credibility will be quickly destroyed. His voice is low and stern, never once hesitating. He slowly lets him go, and Chad quickly composes himself. His anger is no longer there. Instead, there is fear, and he is winded.
"This is not the end. You'll pay for this." Chad looks at us before he picks up his pace and leaves through the back.
"Thank you, I didn't know you were here." I tell him.
"That bastard is always getting in trouble, but this time he went too far." He tells me, He looks extremely upset, but he doesn't say anything else. He turns the opposite way of me and leaves me in the hallway.
By now, people must be wondering where Chad and I have gone. So I put my best face on and head back to the ballroom.
As I walk in, one of Laura's moms approaches me. She was grandma's personal assistant so I had to talk to her on a regular basis.
She gives me a sympathetic look and a smile.
"How are you holding up?" She tells me sweetly.
"I'm ok, I just wish all these people leave so I can go back to my life." I tell her with resentment in my voice.
"They will be leaving soon. They were here for the show, but it looks like you handled Chad pretty good out there." How does she know? Did everyone hear us?
"Don't worry, Laura told me what was happening. Her and Blake were together when it happened. He had it coming, Mrs. Devereaux was afraid he would try to take everything from you, but everything will be taken care off." She tells me reassuringly. I wonder why Blake was with Laura at the exact time I was out with Chad? Where exactly were they? Never mind, I don't care.
"I am not interested in anything that comes to her or her family. I pay my bills, I have own my business and even own my house. I don't need her." I tell her bitterly.
"When she found out she was sick, she tried to tell you, in her own way, maybe she went about it the wrong way, but she wanted to look after you before it was too late." She was sick? How come I didn't know?
"She didn't want you to find out. She wanted to respect your decision of not coming back, very few people knew. She didn't want to stress her business associates and make things harder for you." Ashley seems to read my mind, She has been answering every question without without me even saying a word. No wonder my grandma kept her so many years. I can't believe I didn't know she was sick. She had to suffer in silence.
"Don't worry, She was stubborn til the end."
"Thank you for being there for her. I tell her."
"No problem. It was my pleasure." She smiles at me.
"Before you leave Miss Elloway, you have an appointment with your grandmother's lawyer tomorrow. It will be held at the Devereaux building. Your presence is necessary to fulfill her last will." I just nod and keep going. I don't see why I need to be there, I don't want her money. I'll just have to wait to tomorrow to reject everything.
Most of the people have left by now. There are a few stragglers getting ready to go, but the room is more breathable. I approach the bar to get a drink and hide while everyone leaves, but I stop when I see Blake and Laura kissing passionately. For some reason, it bothers me, but I don't have a relationship with Blake. Last night was just s*x. They are a better match, I guess. It doesn't matter anyway because I will be going back to the town that has been my home for the past 10 years, and I'm planning to never return.
BLAKE'S POV
I could not stand the way Chad was talking to Mya. Eloise would never share her worries for her granddaughter to that scumbag. She didn't trust him, so I knew he was making it up, but the most upsetting part is that he is sure he will be the one managing the estate. I'm sure Eloise has everything in place to make sure that doesn't happen. I wish I was in the room tomorrow when they are reading the will, I'm sure it will be a great show to see Chad go frantic on everyone.
"Blake, do you think we can continue our conversation? My boutique is opening the day before Christmas, and the shop is not even ready. we are two weeks away and..."
" Laura, calm down. Send me a list of everything that you need, and I'll send the contractors." We have been working on this project for a year, I really want her to succeed. Her mothers are very hard on her, but she has the potential to be so much more than a housekeeper.
"Ok, but there is still something I'd like to talk about. Mmm, the guest list is not completely ready, I need your input on a few people." She pleads. I really don't want to do this right now. I just want to go home and sleep, I only slept two hours after I left Mya's bedroom. I decided not to go all the way to my house and instead stayed at my parents to be on time for the funeral.
"Fine, lead the way." I tell her. She starts going towards the bar, and I follow. This area of the house is the most secluded. I take a seat on one of the bar stools, but she stays standing, looking nervously at me.
