At Home

I have never seen some of those colours in my life nor these landscapes nor those types of trees and plants.  Back home most of the colours were from the fire. When the fire was weak it had a certain colour, we called it a smouldering fire. When the fire was unyielding, we called it a raging fire. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful.  The fire we created was mostly in between the raging and the smouldering fire. We called it simply fire. We used to put on fire with the dark white stones, so we can cook what we grow. At home there were four types of trees, the first was our only type of food. The second’s leaves created our clothes.  The third also produces food but has to be crushed and mixed with water. We drank it while it was hot. Finally, the last tree was only used for medicine. It is mixed with water and turns to a muddy substance that we put on wounds.  I was born into these habits, I do not know how our village came to this knowledge, it is said it was discovered by the first men who grew our lands. Yet again, who knows who they are and where they came from.  All trees are made from what we call growing stone. It is not like normal stone but still as strong but also malleable. This is our armour and the handles of weapons that are made of the Hadeed. We carried our food and the liquid of life, water, in something called Fokhar made from watery Remal, mud that is found in the lake.  The lake was not just used for its water and watery Remal but also it’s current. We used the moving water to move a wheel that has eight buckets that are filled one after the other. We tell the time when each bucket is full and the next starts filling. We call this period of time “a bucket” and after a full cycle, there is a man who empties them all and pushes a rock off a cliff, so it makes a sound and because of our home’s nature everyone hears it. This period is called a fallen rock.  At home, it is either always light when the magma is the sky. When it turns to rock it is always dark and we have to start fires all over the village so we can see, work and live. We call these the rock and magma seasons. Or as some used to call them the light and dark seasons. Now we cannot do all of these habits anymore, we have to abandon them, Now we have to adapt to our new environment,  Now we are…
