CHAPTER 25A MAN WHO’LL TALK
The only thoroughly good merchandise in Holy Creek, outside of guns in the Raeburn store, was to be found in the boot department of Hills and Mason’s General Merchandise Store. Barry Litton appeared there late in the afternoon. Since the fire had burned them out, he needed apparel of many kinds, for himself and for Tom Willow. He slipped around and came in the back way, for whenever he appeared in the main street, people were instantly attracted to him and crowded about him. Feeling could not have been higher in his favor. He had done many spectacular things in Holy Creek, and this day the town as a whole had been able to make a gesture that showed something of its appreciation. Men are always more pleased when they have a chance to give, after much taking; and
