My fated mate, Sebastian Percy, had one rule he never broke. After nine at night, he didn't take a mind-link from anybody.

He said that as an Alpha, he spent all day taking in the feelings and the voices of a few hundred pack members. Nine o'clock on was the quiet he kept for himself and his wolf.

Even back when we'd just recognized each other and couldn't keep our hands off each other, nine came around and he'd cut the link without blinking.

A stray wolf followed me home once. I reached for him, scared out of my mind, and what I got was Sebastian annoyed with me.

"You're going to be Luna. You're not some kid who needs walking to her door. Get a handle on your fear and quit bringing me every little thing."

Then, seven days out from the marking ceremony, I opened his Alpha terminal to check the guest list and pulled up the pack link logs without meaning to.

Five years. Every night, nine at night to nine in the morning, a private link open to his assistant, Alice Palmer.

Twelve hours a night. Not one night missed.

So it was never about the quiet. It was about who he wanted on the other end, and it was never me.

That link was never going to come on for me after nine, and I was done sitting around waiting for it.

But when I called off the ceremony and the coronation, and cut the bond between us, he went to pieces. He was on his knees in front of me, begging.

Chapter 1
Get a handle on your fear and quit bringing me every little thing." Then, seven days out from the marking ceremony, I opened his Alpha terminal to check the guest list and pulled up the pack link logs without meaning to. ***** Louisa's POV: The system showed my application was successful just as Sebastian stepped out of the bathroom. He wore only a towel around his waist, his hair still dripping. The cedar scent of a powerful leader instantly filled the entire bedroom. Five years ago, when I first caught this scent, the white wolf inside me was so excited it nearly broke free. It told me over and over. It was him. That was the mate the Moon Goddess had blessed us with. But now, my wolf was so quiet it might as well have been dead. Sebastian glanced at the clock on the wall and frowned slightly. "Three minutes until nine." "Is there anything you wanted to talk about today?" I went blank for two seconds, then shook my head. "No." He nodded. "Alright. Good night." With that, he turned and got into bed without a second thought. At nine o'clock sharp, I felt his mental barrier go up at the edge of my consciousness. The fated bond between us, already weak, was cut off by him. Unmarked fated mates could only share intense emotions at close proximity. Once one of us closed the mental channel, the other could no longer sense their location or injuries. This was also why, on the night I was slashed by a silver blade, Sebastian had been able to sleep until dawn completely unaware. I remained seated at my desk without moving. A moment later, the Alpha's terminal that had gone dark suddenly lit up. A private mental channel was connecting. The request was from Alice. Sebastian accepted it in a second, as if afraid to keep her waiting a moment longer. I turned to look at the man in bed. He had already closed his eyes, his breathing steady, as if he were asleep. But at this moment, I finally noticed things I'd never noticed before. Like the obsidian ear cuff placed beside his pillow to enhance the mental link. Like how his tightly furrowed brows gradually relaxed after the private channel connected. Like that patient smile at the corner of his mouth he'd never shown me. I let out a self‑mocking laugh. So he could be considerate too. Only, I wasn't his exception. After turning off the terminal, I picked up my phone and replied to the transfer notice from the Werewolf Council's Foreign Affairs Department that I'd received a week ago. Rothbury Liaison Office, with a five‑year term. Half a year ago, I had represented the Werewolf Council in resolving a water source dispute between two border packs. Because of that, the Foreign Affairs Department had twice offered me promotions and overseas assignments. I'd turned it down. Because I was about to complete the marking with Sebastian and officially become the Luna of the Silverfir Wolf Pack. As Luna, I wouldn't be able to leave my territory for long. But now, that was no longer necessary. My boss replied quickly. Boss: Have you thought it through? Once you accept, you'll leave in two days, and you can't be transferred back at will for five years. I texted back. Louisa: I've thought it through. Behind me, Sebastian's breathing remained steady. Alice was probably at ease too. After all, with his mental link, she wouldn't have nightmares anymore. But when I was slashed with a silver knife that night, even being afraid had seemed like a sign of immaturity. I closed my eyes. For the first time in five years, I didn't wait for Sebastian to reopen our link at dawn. When I woke up the next morning, he was already standing in the walk‑in closet. He wore a black suit, his expression cold and aristocratic. That day, the Werewolf Council Academy had an open lecture, and he was to attend as both Alpha and professor. As was my habit, I would prepare his tie, cufflinks, and herbs to manage his lingering injuries. But that day, I only gathered my own documents and turned to leave. As we passed each other, Sebastian suddenly called out to me, "You're not going to tie my tie?" I stopped and looked back at him. He held the tie in his hand, his eyes puzzled and expectant, as if I were born to handle these things for him. I smiled faintly. "Not anymore. You can learn to do it yourself, or have your teaching assistant help you." Sebastian was silent for two seconds. "You mean Alice?" Just mentioning her name softened his stern expression. "She certainly does. Before the last Council lecture, she said I hadn't tied it well and redid it for me. She pays attention to detail, and she's more patient than you with this sort of thing." After he finished, he finally seemed to notice something off about what I'd said. "But what does that have to do with you refusing to tie my tie?" I looked at him for a long time. Suddenly at a loss for words, I shook my head. "Nothing. I just don't want to anymore." Sebastian pressed his lips together, clearly displeased. "Suit yourself." He added, "By the way, you don't need to come to the academy to bring me lunch. Alice said she'll bring it." My hand stilled on the doorknob. "Alright." Sebastian had been injured in a territorial conflict three years ago. A silver fragment had lodged in his side. Although it had long since been removed, his ability to heal remained compromised. All these years, I had spent every day researching herbs and recipes for him. No matter how busy I was with work, I would personally deliver them to the academy. Now that someone had volunteered to take over, I should have been happy. I left the pack house and went straight to the Werewolf Council. Signed the transfer paperwork, filed for a cross-territory permit, started the dissolution. The woman at the desk saw the name on the application and looked up at me twice. "You're sure you want to dissolve a fated bond with the Alpha of Silverfir? You two haven't completed the marking. If you formally refuse him, the bond can be severed, yes. But it comes back on both of you. Your wolf could go dormant, and it could be a long time before she comes back up." I looked down at the documents. "I'm certain." The staff member asked again, "Should we notify the other party immediately?" I shook my head. "Per standard procedure, notify them only once the application officially takes effect." On the day the application officially took effect, Sebastian was supposed to bite my neck and shoulder in front of the Moon Goddess statue to complete the marking. Instead, he would receive a bond dissolution notice. That was good. At least the guests wouldn't have made the trip for nothing. When I walked out of the council building, sunlight fell upon me. My silver scar itched a little. Yet I felt a lightness I had never experienced before. I opened my mate profile and deleted Sebastian's details entirely. From now on, I wouldn't need it again.
