Can't catch a break

The slap came out of nowhere and surprised me to no end.

While I was standing there dazed, my mother yelled hysterically, “You slut! if I knew this day would come I would’ve choked you to death back then. I should’ve killed you, I should’ve killed you!”

Even my father who’s usually impassive all day round was glaring at me with undisguised fury. My mother went on to slap me again which made me stumble a little, “You disgraceful faggot, like it wasn’t enough for you to be an Omega that you had to be gay too! Not to mention, the Alpha’s mate at that. I knew it, I knew you were a curse, I shouldn’t have given birth to someone like you!”

She went ahead to pull her own hair while screaming, her gaze unfocused while her crazed eyes stared at me murderously.

I finally understood why she was so mad at me. Turns out she discovered I was Gayle’s mate at the party today. They were never home so they didn’t even get a whiff of it before, but today when Gayle and I walked in hand in hand she must’ve blown a fuse.

“I must’ve committed a lot of sins for you to be gay… no, no, it wasn’t my fault, you were born an abomination to begin with, a curse who made me lose my position as Warrior Beta, you were always unlucky. To think you’re the Luna, I feel sorry for Alpha Gayle, you will destroy the pack just like you destroyed our family you filthy w***e!”

Before she could grab me again, I dodged to the left and stared at her coldly. Even though I was numb to her beatings and it was nothing out of the norm, I still couldn’t stand her disrespecting my mate or my pack, despite not having any fond memories, I was still happy here with Ashlyn, Mia and Zac.

“I suggest you stop disrespecting my mate and the pack, I’m not someone you can hit at will” My sharp words made my mother stop in her tracks, then she glared at me even more furiously, “You b***h, how dare you!”

She rushed to grab my throat.

“Stop! What the hell are you doing?!” Ashlyn’s angry voice made everyone pause for a moment. Her hair was dripping wet, she must’ve rushed out of the shower hearing all the commotion downstairs.

Her eyes worriedly swept over my face, “You actually hit him?! What were you thinking, or were you not thinking at all before hitting your son and the future Luna of this pack?!” She glowered at my mother, “And dad why the hell are you just standing there, why didn’t you stop her?” She questioned our father who had no plans of intervening at all.

“I have no intentions of stopping Nicole, Ashlyn. She’s doing nothing wrong. We’ve been tolerating this boy’s existence all this while, but to think he’s gay, he had it coming”, he justified his actions in a monotonous voice.

Ashlyn looked at our father in disbelief, while I was just as dumfounded.

At that moment I realized that according to them, they did nothing wrong. Rather, they believe I should be grateful to them for their tolerance.

My eyes glossed over as the final shred of relation I had with my parents disappeared. From this day forth, I could no longer regard them as people with emotions, let alone parents.

“Why are you protecting this slut, Ashlyn?! He’s definitely the reason why you don’t have a mate, his abnormality must’ve enraged the moon goddess, he’s the harbinger of calamity. Alpha Gayle is really unlucky to have this thing as his mate, their relationship will never work because it’s unnatural!” The crazed look on my mother’s face made me shudder more than her words.

“I can throw your words right back at you, you guys actually dare to question the pairing that moon goddess herself designed? Are you not doubting her authority?! Besides, Alpha Gayle treats Irving just like any other mate would”, I winced at Ashlyn’s words as the truth was far from what she believed.

“I’ve had enough of all the torture you’re putting him through, pack your stuff and get out, you’ve overstayed your welcome” Ashlyn decisively declared under our parents’ shocked gaze.

“You can’t throw us out! We’re your parents”, Our father said as he looked at Ashlyn with displeasure all over his face. “Yeah, you can’t kick out your own parents Ashlyn” our mother chimed in.

But it only served to darken Ashlyn’s gaze even more, “Then I don’t need such parents! I’m not just your daughter but also the Warrior Beta of Bloodhound pack. Leave this instant! I’ll have someone send your stuff”

“Hah! Warrior Beta of the pack?” mother guffawed, “That was MY position you’re being smug over. It was, it is and always will be. You can’t change the facts”

Ashlyn just muttered something incoherent under her breath, refusing to argue any further with our parents.

Intimidated by Ashlyn’s frigid gaze, our parents reluctantly decided to leave. But before walking out, our mother didn’t forget to give a snide remark, “Mark my words Omega, your relationship is doomed, you’ll end up destroying the pack with your own hands. We’ll see who has the last laugh”

With that, she strode out of the house with her husband following close by. Her words still rang in my mind as clear as day. Even if they were only meant to slight me, I couldn’t help but admit that most of them were already true, while Ashlyn was still in the dark over the matter.

As I was still lost in thought, a hand wrapped around my shoulders as Ashlyn’s concerned gaze entered my field of vision.

“Hey… I’m sorry… All of this wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t let them stay in the first place” Ashlyn’s remorseful voice entered my ears.

“It’s not your fault Ash. They’ve always been like this” It’s true, I’d rather not dwell on the past and blame Ashlyn for their mistakes.

“I’ve already mindlinked Alpha Gayle to come and get you. Today must’ve been awful for you, make sure to get a lot of rest when you go back” Ashlyn said as she patted my back reassuringly.

But I only felt nervous upon hearing her words. Gayle clearly said he won’t come back to pick me up, what if he never comes. Ashlyn might know something’s wrong.

After the endless wait full of dread, a car sent by Gayle really did show up, but Gayle wasn’t in sight.

“I clearly told Alpha Gayle about everything that happened and how upset you are, but he only sent the driver and didn’t show up himself? Does he not feel your emotions through the mate bond?” Ashlyn’s brows furrowed in doubt.

Of course he doesn’t feel them, we haven’t bonded yet to begin with, “Actually Gayle already told me that he’ll be waiting at home so you don’t need to worry, I’m tired so I’ll be going back first. Seeya Ash”

I hug Ashlyn goodbye before she could assault me with more questions, the moment I get in the care I let out an exhausted sigh. I don’t know when Mrs. Dale will be back, I was really craving some of her Chamomile tea.

I was on the verge of collapse when I reached home and couldn’t wait to enter the comfort of my own room, but it seems like I just couldn’t catch a break today. Standing in the hall was none other than Nina Sanders clad in nothing but a short bathrobe.

Upon meeting my eyes, she faked surprise and deliberately loosened her robes to show off the cluster of hickeys on her body.

I had denied it. The whole ride back, I tried to ignore the burning sensation in my chest and just fooled myself like every other day that maybe he wasn’t going to cheat on me today but it was to no avail, Gayle never failed to shatter my hopes.

Despite Nina’s obvious attempt at striking up a conversation with me, I simply ignored her and walked towards my room upstairs. I knew better than not keeping my distance from her after the incident last time. Even if we did talk it would result in her bragging and me being humiliated, I really didn’t wish to deal with her anymore. She’d be kicked out in a few weeks anyway, Gayle gets bored of his side chicks pretty easily.

Nina was visibly fuming at being ignored. What’s wrong with that woman, does she seriously expect me to chit-chat with her? A werewolf being friendly with their mate’s mistress?

I plopped down on the bed after a quick shower, my mind occupied with endless worries when I heard my phone ring. It was Ashlyn.

“Hey Irv you reached home okay?”

“Yeah, just got out of the shower. Why did you call? You could’ve used the mindlink.”

“I’m in the car right now, just got called to another pack upon rogue sightings so I didn’t want the mindlink to break halfway since it’s pretty far.”

“Right now? Isn’t it pretty late?”, I instantly felt worried for her, it’s not like she never got injured before while on pack duty. But it becomes twice as dangerous at night, plus the rogues’ motives are still uncertain.

“Don’t worry, the pack is already taking care of my accommodations so I’ll probably start investigating tomorrow morning. And Irving, I want you to know that I’m proud of you for standing up against our parents”

I was caught off-guard by her words, “It’s not that much of a big deal. I just, didn’t want them to feel like they could control me anymore”

“No Irv, it ‘is’ a big deal to stand up for yourself, you should never hesitate to speak up when you’re being mistreated…… By the way Irv, I saw neither you nor Alpha Gayle wearing those promise rings, did you not give ‘em to him?”

I froze hearing Ashlyn’s question, “N-no it’s not like that, I gave t-the ring to him and he likes them, like a lot! We chose not to wear them t-today cuz they didn’t match the outfit and we didn’t want to lose them”

“… Okay…? But Irv, you do realize that is a stupid excuse, right? People don’t stop wearing their wedding rings cuz they don’t match their clothes. Be honest, did you lose them already?”

“No! I mean… yes. Yes, I lost them last night so we couldn’t wear them today but I f-found them already so we’ll start wearing them again”

“See, you should’ve just told me the truth, it’s not like I’d scold you for it. I would’ve just bought you twenty more pairs to choose from. But it’s a relief you found them again”

“…”

Sometimes I can’t tell if Ashlyn’s being serious or sarcastic.

We talked for a bit longer before she hung up citing traffic issues. I carelessly throw my phone onto the bed and grab the petite ring box from the bedside drawer.

Tracing them with my fingertips, I could only sigh in sadness.

I would probably never get a chance to give these to Gayle in this lifetime. Spinning the ceaseless web of lies, I wonder how long I will last.

“That’s a pretty pair you’re holding”

Startled at the comment, I look towards the owner of the voice. Nina stood smirking in the doorway, gazing intently at the box in my hand.

I reflexively hide it behind my back. How long has she been standing there?

“What’re you doing in my room?”

“I was exploring my future dwelling and happened to stumble across the living quarters of an unwanted person”

I scoffed at her words, if anything, she always comes to me whenever she wants a punching bag. “Leave”, I utter through clenched teeth as her mere presence was unpleasant.

“Luna… how can you ask me to leave? I… I really do love Alpha Gayle”, Nina suddenly sobbed like she was on the verge of tears.

Wait, Luna? She never calls me Luna unless Gayle’s here. He must be close.

“Stop-!”

“I… I really do love him, Luna. I can give up my life for him”, she then began crying uncontrollably.

Gayle’s scent already spread in my room as he stood behind Nina. With an imposing tone he questioned, “What’s going on?”

My blood ran cold because I realized that there was no way to get out of this situation.

“I just wanted to apologize to Luna because he blamed me for telling you the truth last time but… but he got really mad at me and asked me to… to leave you. I’m sorry Alpha, you gave me so many gifts and so much love but I, I only cause trouble for you”, finishing her words, Nina broke down in uncontrollable sobs.

Gayle’s expression turned bad as he shot me a threatening look, “Time and time again you make me realize just what kind of person you are, did it never occur to you how painful your words might sound to her you heartless b***h?!”

Me? Heartless? You care about her pain but what about mine? You’re always protecting your mistress over your mate.

I knew that if I said these words out loud it’ll only end with me getting slapped and Nina getting her way, what else could I do except endure in silence.

Seeing Gayle’s attention on my heartbroken face, Nina sobbed harder to make Gayle recall his purpose. “You silly girl, how could you possibly think I’d blame you for this Omega’s mistakes. I shower you with gifts because you’re precious, I’ll give you anything you want so stop crying, ok?”

Nina looked at Gayle with a pitiful gaze, “Anything I want?”

Gayle momentarily distracted by Nina pressing her body on him, immediately nodded.

I had a very bad feeling in my heart, and I wasn’t wrong because Nina’s next words were, “Then I want those rings in Luna’s hand”
