Chapter One: The Battlefield I Didn’t Choose
***********Elara’s POV************* The moment I walked into the big Kings house, everything changed. I wasn't sure if it was my own fear or the way two sets of eyes watched me from the door. I just felt it—a thick, heavy feeling. Ethan King was the first to move. He stood against a tall stone pillar like he owned the place. He looked like he had practiced his charming smile a million times. His dark suit fit him perfectly, and his smile was even more perfect. But he wasn't smiling at me. He was smiling at his brother, like he was saying, "Watch me take what you can't have." Next to him was Adrian. He stood straight and stiff, his jaw tight, his hands held in tight fists. While Ethan looked smooth and confident, Adrian looked like a storm was coming. His eyes were on me—not friendly, but hard and angry, like he was guarding me. I hadn't even said a word, and the fight had already started. “Welcome, Elara,” Ethan said in a smooth voice. It sounded sweet, like honey. He walked past his brother to take my hand, doing it on purpose to show he didn't care. But before his skin could touch mine, Adrian stepped in first. He reached out and took my hand. His grip was strong, almost too strong. His voice was so low it made my heart jump. “She’s with me tonight.” The room went quiet. Even their both parents, Mr. Alden and Miss Victoria, looked up from their drinks with a surprised look. For a second, no one moved. No one breathed. Ethan’s smirk grew bigger. “Oh, is she?” he said slowly, his eyes still on me. “That’s funny, I don’t remember you asking her.” I swallowed hard. I suddenly wished I hadn't come. The invitation had sounded simple—just a small dinner. But standing here, with them staring at me, I knew I had walked into something bad. Two brothers. One fight. And I was the reason. Dinner was terrible. The light from the lamp above made the table glow, but the air was so thick with tension it was hard to breathe. Ethan sat on my left, Adrian on my right. They were both too close, and too aware of each other. Ethan leaned in first, his voice quiet, just for me. “I hope you don’t mind me saying this, Elara, but you look great tonight.” His words were smooth, but before I could answer, Adrian spoke up in a sharp voice. “She doesn’t need you to tell her that, Ethan.” I froze, my fork halfway to my mouth. My face felt hot, not from the compliment, but from the way Adrian sounded—rough and angry, like he owned me. Ethan gave a soft laugh. “Always so protective. Tell me, brother, are you trying to protect Elara… or your pride?” The table went silent. Mr. King looked angry, but he didn’t say anything. It was like he was used to this. Like the fight between his sons was older than I could ever understand. I forced a smile, desperate to break the tension. "Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. King, for inviting me to dinner." They both smiled. "You're welcome, Elara. We hope you're enjoying the meal?" Mrs. Victoria asked. "Oh yes, I am. It's delicious," I replied with a huge smile. "You know, my mother prepared all of this herself," Ethan said. "Oh, really? You're a great cook, ma'am," I replied, and she smiled. "Thank you, Elara," she said. "Next, Elara is going to cook for us," Ethan announced. "Give her a break, Ethan. You don't get to make decisions for her," Adrian snapped back angrily. Ethan laughed. "Always so protective. I don't remember asking for your opinion, you scum." "Can the both of you stop fighting?" Mrs. Victoria said, her face tight with anger. I felt so frustrated. After dinner, I said I needed some fresh air. I just wanted to get away from the fight. The garden was beautiful under the night sky. The air was cool and calm. But I didn't get to have any peace. Ethan showed up first. He came out of the shadows with a glass of wine. “Finally,” he whispered, stepping closer. “I thought I’d never get you alone.” My heart beat faster. He was staring at me hard, and his smile was a magnet. For a second, I forgot to breathe. Then Adrian’s voice came through the night. “She said she wanted air, Ethan. Not you.” He had followed us. Of course he had. The brothers faced each other. The tension between them was like electricity. Ethan held up his glass slowly. “Be careful, Adrian. People might think you’re jealous.” “Jealous?” Adrian’s laugh was sharp and had no humor in it. “No. I just know what you’re like.” Their words weren't just about me. I could feel it—years of fighting, anger, and old hurts I couldn’t see. But tonight, I was the match that made it all burn brighter. Before I could walk away, Ethan turned to me. His eyes were dark with something I couldn't name. “Tell me, Elara,” he said in a soft voice, “if you had to choose right now… who would it be?” I took a sharp breath. “What?” Adrian’s voice was a low growl. “Don’t put her in the middle of your games.” But Ethan never looked away from me. His smile was gone, replaced by something hard and hungry. “She already is.” My heart was pounding in my chest. I wanted to say I didn’t belong here, but the words wouldn't come out. Deep down, I knew something scary—Ethan was right. Adrian stepped closer, his hand touching mine again. His voice was low and urgent. “Don’t listen to him. He’s dangerous, Elara. Stay away from him. Stay with me.” My chest felt tight, my mind was spinning. Two brothers. Two different choices. Ethan’s voice was sharp and final. “She’ll stay with the one who can win her heart. And that won’t be you, Adrian.” Then, without warning, he leaned forward. His lips came dangerously close to mine. I gasped, frozen, caught between them. Adrian’s hand made a fist. His voice was a quiet, angry whisper. If you touch her, Ethan… I swear you’ll be sorry.” Ethan just laughed, a mean, sharp sound. “Oh, yeah?” he said, stepping back with a mean look in his eyes. He walked in a slow circle around me, watching Adrian the whole time. “What the hell are you going to do, Adrian? Punch me in the face? Fire me? Cut me out of the family money? I'm not one of your pets, you dickhead. You act like you have all the power, but you’re just the guy who follows the rules. I’m the one who breaks them.” Adrian stepped closer, his jaw tight. “You don’t have a heart, Ethan. You don’t care about anyone but yourself. This isn’t a game, you piece of s**t! She’s not just some girl you can win.” “And she isn’t your stuff, either!” Ethan yelled back, his charming mask gone. His face was full of pure rage. He faced Adrian fully, holding his hands out, "come on." “You want to show how much you deserve her? Come on then, prove it Adrian! A few punches won't hurt that much.” Adrian clenched his fists. He lunged forward, not at Ethan, but past him, towards me. The move was so fast and strong it scared me. I flinched, thinking he was going to grab me and pull me away. But he didn’t. He stopped just inches from me, his arm out to stop Ethan, his body a shield. His blue eyes, usually cold, were now on fire with a raw, protective look that gave me goosebumps. The two brothers were now a mess of rage, pushing and shoving in a silent fight. Their quiet insults had turned into harsh, angry sounds. I had never felt so stuck. I was just a person caught between a storm of male pride and bitter competition. The moonlight seemed to be laughing at how crazy it all was. I could only hear my own heart pounding in my ears, drowning out their whispers and shoves. Something inside me finally broke. The fear and anger and how ridiculous it all was came out in a single, hot burst of rage. “STOP!” It wasn't a scream. It was one single, sharp word. It cut through the tense air like a knife. And just like that, they stopped. Ethan and Adrian both froze. Their bodies were still leaning into the fight, but their movements suddenly went still. They turned to me, their eyes wide, the rage gone and replaced by stunned silence. For the first time all night, they weren't looking at each other. They were looking at me. “I'm leaving,” I said to both of them. “Let me take you home,” Adrian said to me. “No one is taking me home,” I replied.”And in that moment, under the cold moon, I knew something I couldn’t deny—this wasn’t just a fight. This was an obsession. This was about owning something. And I was the prize.
