chapter 1
Eva’s heart raced as she stared down at the white stick in her trembling hands.
Two clear lines glowed back at her, and for a moment, her breath hitched.
Was this real? After five years of countless doctors’ visits, IVF treatments, and late-night cries alone in the bathroom, was this finally happening?.
She pressed her hand to her belly, tears streaming down her cheeks as the realization hit her fully.
"I’m pregnant," she whispered, her voice barely a breath. She said it again, louder this time. "I’m pregnant!"
The joy that surged through her chest felt like a dam had finally burst, years of bottled-up grief flooding out. After five years of fruitless marriage, with no pregnancy, because her husband has low sperm count, she and her husband opted for iVR, and the doctor said the chance of her getting pregnant with the sperm would be 30%, which was very rare.
She rushed to the bedroom where her husband, Michael, was sitting, half-dressed in his work clothes, fixing his cufflinks in front of the mirror. His brow furrowed slightly as she burst through the door, her excitement barely contained.
“Michael!” Her voice wavered, breathless. “Michael, it worked. It worked—we’re going to have a baby!”
For a moment, time seemed to freeze. His hands paused in mid-air, the cufflink slipping from his grasp and hitting the floor with a soft clink.
His eyes widened in surprise, scanning her face, trying to make sense of what she had said.
“Eva... you mean—?” His voice trailed off, uncertain.
“Yes, I’m pregnant!” She laughed through her tears, rushing over to him. “After all this time, Michael, we did it, I told you, your sperm would be one of the rare case.We are going to be parents.”
He stared at her, his expression unreadable, then his lips curled into a slow smile, “wow, I'm happy”, he muttered, and rushed down the kitchen and started cooking, he made some text on his phone.
Eva was so surprised, her husband had never done this, he must have be very excited.
“Wow, I don't know you can cook!!!”, She excitedly said, watching him, and smiled. All the time, Micheal was just smiling also, not even looking at her.
Just then, the door intercom rang
Eva turned, still giddy with joy, expecting it to be one of their close friends or family Micheal texted.
But when she saw who it was, her smile faltered. A woman stepped into the room—tall, elegant, with waves of dark hair cascading over her shoulders.
Her face was one Eva had only seen in old photographs, back when Michael would talk about his past with nostalgia.
She frowned as she recognized her!.
It was her, His first love.
She wasn’t sure why this woman was here, now of all time.
“Babyy!!”, The woman hauled, as Micheal rushed out from the kitchen and embraced her as he hugged her so tightly. And they started kissing!.
Eva stood there for some moments, before getting her senses and hauled, “ What is happening?!”.
The lady swiftly turned at her, “Oh, she must be that your wife, the useless one!”.
Eva was confused
“Eva,” Micheal said, turning to face her, still holding the woman close. “I think we need to talk.”
Her throat tightened, her pulse quickening. “Michael… what are you doing?”
He released the other woman and faced Eva fully, his expression now hardened, businesslike. "Iet us divorce, we should end this ."
Her body went cold, her mind refusing to process what he had just said. She forced herself to speak, her voice trembling. “End what, Michael? What are you talking about?”
“Our marriage.” His tone was cold, final.
“What about it, I am pregnant, why are we talking about divorce, what's happening!”.
“Now that I know I’m not infertile… I think there shouldn't be any need I should get stuck with you ”
Eva stumbled backward as though she had been struck. Her hands instinctively moved to her stomach, “you are not, you just had some problem, and we made a baby!, I still haven't get you!”.
“You’re pregnant through IVF, Eva,” he said, almost dismissively. “The baby wasn’t conceived naturally. It was just a clinical procedure—a test to prove that I could still father a child. And now that I know it’s possible, there’s no need to continue this contract marriage.”
Contract marriage?, Eva couldn't believe it, yes, they were married through contract to save the Micheal family from bankruptcy, and they both grew to love each other. Through thick and thin.
They were unable to conceive, for so many years, and it was found that Michael had low sperm count, and maybe, IVF can help. So, they did it and it worked, but Micheal was asking now for divorce and that their marriage was nothing but a transaction!.
She stared at him, her voice cracking. “You’re saying I was just an experiment, to know if You can conceive?”
He didn't flinch. "Yes."
"You can't be serious, Michael!" Her voice rose, "We’ve spent years trying for this baby. We’ve been through everything together. And now you're telling me to leave!”.
Michael stated “I never for once love you. We have always had unfinished business. And now that I know I can have children, I don’t see why I should stay in a marriage that's been difficult for me!”.
Eva’s entire body shook. “So what? What about the baby!”.
“terminate it, I will give you the money!”.
Her chest heaved with rage and sorrow “You are a monster. You used me for your company and for an experiment!”
“Eva, yeah, and that is it!”.
The lady curled around Micheal, “baby, she is scary, just send her away already, and give me your sperm let me give you the baby you want".
Eva stood there unbelievable as tears streamed out of her eyes.
“I will have the papers drawn up tomorrow, and the termination fee, now out!” he said, his voice colder than ice.
“You can't just send me away, my belongings are….”.
She didn't even let her land, as he shoved her away, “Go away right now, you brought nothing to this house, and let me and my babe celebrate this announcement with love of my life, I am not infantile!!”.
“Micheal, Micheal…”, she screamed as he finally pushed her out and slammed the door in her face.
Eva stood there lost, she listened to her mom and stepfather to marry him and abandoned her career!. They threw her away, and she knew if she went to them now, they wouldn't take her.
She sniffed, controlling the upcoming tears. Then her phone rang and it was from her doctor.
She swallowed her tears and picked it up.
“Hello, Mrs. Micheal, you have to come here regarding your IVF operation, there is a huge mistake!”.
