After five long years of my trafficking, the police finally brought me back to the Nelson family.

The moment I stepped through the door, a girl about my age peeked out from behind my mother. Her name was Amelia Nelson, the child my parents had adopted after I disappeared.

My mother, Amanda Nelson, held Amelia tightly, her body trembling. Her teary eyes met mine, tears spilling over.

Yet those tears held no joy—only panic and resistance.

My father, Samuel Nelson, moved to shield Amanda. When he spoke to me for the first time, his voice was distant and cold.

"From now on, your name is Jessica Nelson. Learn the house rules from Amy. The most important one is to do nothing that makes your mother remember the past," he said, his gaze stern.

I clung to the police officer's hand, afraid to let go.

A confusing ache settled in my chest. 'Am I "the past"? Was I brought back not to be remembered, but to be forgotten?'

Chapter 1 Unwelcome Homecoming
Was I brought back not to be remembered, but to be forgotten?' ***** A housekeeper wearing an apron emerged from the kitchen. Spotting me, she paused, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her face before she turned to Samuel. "Sir, shall I... set an extra place for dinner?" Her tone suggested I was an uninvited beggar, not the long-lost member of this house. Samuel's frown deepened. "Just do it," he replied with a dismissive wave. Dinner was even more stifling than the initial silence. The long dining table groaned under the weight of a lavish spread, the air rich with savory smells that offered me no comfort. My plate remained conspicuously empty. A platter of honey-glazed barbecue ribs, glistening temptingly, sat near the center. With a gentle smile, Amanda used a serving spoon to heap a generous portion onto Amelia's plate. "Here you go, sweetheart. Your favorite. You need your strength." Samuel added a piece of herb-crusted cod to her dish, his voice uncharacteristically soft. "How's the prep for the math competition going?" "No worries, Dad. My teacher says I have a real shot at the gold," Amelia chirped, her smile a perfect blend of obedience and confidence. "That's my girl." Samuel nodded, satisfaction evident. Watching their effortless, warm interaction, I felt like a ghost haunting its own home—visible, yet utterly irrelevant. My stomach chose that moment to growl loudly, a traitorous sound in the quiet room. I was starving, having eaten nothing all day but a stale sandwich during police interviews. Driven by a faint, almost forgotten memory, I hesitantly picked up my fork. I reached slowly toward that same platter of ribs, the dish that somehow still felt like a taste of home. The fork tines had just brushed against a piece of meat. A sharp, piercing scream shattered the calm. Amanda recoiled as if struck. The plate crashed to the floor, shattering. Her face drained of all color as she pointed a shaking finger at me, at my fork hovering over the dish, her whole body convulsing with terror. "Don't! Don't you touch that!" Everyone froze. Samuel's expression turned stormy. He rushed to gather Amanda into his arms, then whirled toward me, his voice a low, furious growl. His words fell like stones. "Who told you to touch that? Do you have any idea? That? Those ribs were your favorite! Five years ago today, you ate them, then ran outside... right into the arms of the stranger who took you!"
