Chapter 1: Who am I
The sky was heavy with rain, and Sophie had to clean up the party room quickly before heading home. She didn't want to face her master's wrath, she was afraid of the punishment that would be inflicted on her. As she worked, the dim lights cast eerie shadows on the walls. She was alone, except for the occasional sound of footsteps from the guard. Sophie's auburn hair stuck to her forehead as she scrubbed the stubborn stains. Suddenly, a hand grasped hers, pinning her to the wall. Fear engulfed her. "W-who are you? Please leave me alone, I'm just a cleaner," she pleaded. A husky voice whispered, "Detoxify me, or I'll die. You won't regret it, I promise." The stranger's hot breath on her neck sent shivers down her spine. He kissed her ear, and Sophie whimpered, struggling to break free. Afterward, he handed her a ruby chain and her working jacket. "Don't worry, I'll compensate you for this." Sophie couldn't look up, fearing her master's punishment. She grabbed her jacket and ran. Minutes later... As Sophie entered her master's house, her head hung low in shame, the weight of her tardiness settling heavy on her shoulders. The grandeur of the hallway, with its crystal chandelier and polished marble floor, seemed to mock her, a stark contrast to her own miserable state. "Where have you been?" a female voice scolded, echoing through the hallway like a whip, cutting through the silence. "You're thirty minutes late." Sophie slowly looked up, her eyes cast downward, to see her mistress's daughter, Megara, descending the stairs with an air of superiority. Megara's black hair was neatly tied, not a single strand out of place, and her hazel eyes met Sophie's dark blue ones with a piercing gaze, as if searching for any hint of defiance. Sophie shivered, still damp from the rain and trembling with fear, her heart racing with anticipation. She knelt down, unable to meet Megara's gaze, her eyes fixed on the floor, her mind racing with excuses. "I-I'm sorry, madam," Sophie stammered, her voice barely audible, a mere whisper in the grand hallway. "The rain...I had to come back. Please forgive me." Megara's expression turned cold, her lips curling into a sneer, her eyes flashing with anger. She slapped Sophie, the sound echoing through the hallway like a c***k of thunder, and stepped on her hand with her heel, causing Sophie to whimper in pain. "Don't waste my time again," Megara warned, her voice dripping with malice, her words hanging in the air like a threat. "You're lucky your grandmother was there to help you. Remove my shoes and throw them away. I won't wear them again after they've been stained by you. Wash your filthy hands before returning." The words cut deep, a harsh reminder of Sophie's place in the household. Sophie crawled, wincing in pain, and carefully removed the shoe, her heart heavy with sorrow, her mind reeling with thoughts of escape. Another female voice interrupted, "Megara, darling, I have news you won't like." Megara turned to face her mother, who had just entered, her expression a mix of disdain and disappointment, her eyes scanning Sophie's pitiful state. "Ugh, look at you, Sophie. You're disgusting. Get out of here immediately." Sophie felt a surge of pain and humiliation, remembering the events of the night and the stranger's words, her heart sinking with despair. Megara's mother continued, "He's disabled, almost a vegetable. We can't let you marry him. Should we leave the country? He doesn't even know your face yet." Sophie's heart sank, her hopes of escape dwindling, her future looking bleaker than ever. But then she felt something in her pocket - the ruby chain. She wondered about the stranger and his promise to compensate her. She thought, "I have to find him; he might help me." A glimmer of hope emerged, and Sophie vowed to find a way out of her miserable life, no matter the cost. Two days ago....... SOPHIE'S POV I woke up with a pounding headache, disoriented and confused, my mind foggy and unclear. Where was I? How did I get here? And who was I? Panic set in as I scrambled to remember anything, but my mind was a blank slate, devoid of any memories. All I could recall was the faint outline of a man's face, but it vanished before I could grasp it, leaving me with more questions than answers. I tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over me, forcing me back onto the pillow. A gentle voice broke the silence, calm and soothing, like a warm breeze on a summer day. "My child, you're awake. Please lay back down and rest. You're not feeling well." The aged woman's voice was like a balm to my frazzled nerves, but I remained tense, unsure of who she was or why she called me her child. I tried to speak, but my voice was barely a whisper, my throat dry and parched. "Who...who are you?" I stammered, trying to find my voice, my words tumbling out in a jumbled mess. The woman's gaze lingered on me, her eyes filled with a deep concern, before responding, "It's me, Grandmother. Don't you remember me, Sophie?" Sophie? Was that my name? The woman's words sparked a glimmer of recognition, and I realized she was indeed my grandmother. I tried to remember more, but my mind was a complete blank, a void where memories should have been. I felt a surge of fear, wondering if I had lost my mind, or if something more sinister was at play. "Take your bath and come out for breakfast," she said, her voice warm and comforting, like a hug on a cold day. "We don't have much, but we'll make do with what we have." Her words were simple, yet they filled me with a sense of hope, a glimmer of light in the darkness. As I followed her instructions, I took in my surroundings, trying to absorb every detail. The small room was modest, with old furniture and worn clothes. Everything seemed to belong to a different era, a bygone age. I felt like a relic from the past, a ghost haunting a life I didn't remember. The bath was a blur, my mind still reeling from the events of the past two days. I dressed in the worn clothes my grandmother provided, feeling like a stranger in my own skin. As I entered the kitchen, the aroma of cooking food filled my senses, and my stomach growled in response. I was hungry, but my mind was still racing with questions. Who was I? What had happened to me? And why couldn't I remember anything?
