Chapter Fifteen I’m not going to leave you alone to deal with this. Ian’s voice ran through Elizabeth’s head as they trotted toward the first diner off the highway. Ian had said that out of duty, of course. Those words meant nothing more. Her steps slowed as a wave of nausea hit her. What’s wrong with me? She took a deep breath, and a wisp of black smoke caught her attention. She turned at the same moment a man rammed against her shoulder. She blinked as black wisps of smoke wafted from him. Suddenly, she felt as if she could look into him. His skin was a mere shell over what was within, and within him was a darkness, an emptiness. It was like a black hole, trying to suck her in.
