Chapter 1: The Restricted Zone The scent of dust and old parchment always calmed me, which is why I found myself in the Northwood Academy observatory at 10:00 PM. It was strictly off-limits, but that was the point. Here, I wasn't Maya, the valedictorian under a microscope; I was just a girl who liked the stars. I pushed the heavy oak door open, expecting silence, but the creak was answered by the soft glow of a flashlight beam cutting through the dark. "You're late," a voice rasped from the shadows. My heart hammered against my ribs. I knew that voice. It was Caleb Thorne, the transfer student, who treated the school's dress code like a personal insult and the faculty like his own private audience. "Caleb?" I whispered, my voice sounding too loud in the cavernous space. "What are you doing here?" He stepped into the sliver of moonlight filtering through the cracked dome. He looked different without the classroom lights—softer, yet more dangerous. "Same thing as you, Maya. Looking for an escape." He clicked his flashlight off, leaving us in the thick, heavy darkness of the room. The air between us suddenly felt charged, a silent tension that made my breath hitch. I had spent my entire high school career building walls, and standing here in the dark with him, I realized I was terrifyingly tempted to tear them all down.
