CHAPTER 28 The scratchy fabric against her cheek was the first thing Maddie became aware of as she drifted up from sleep. She realized she was rocking slightly, like in a cradle or a swing, and wondered if that was part of something she’d been dreaming. She lolled, lazy, wrapped in warmth while remnants of her dream state swirled at the edge of consciousness, swimming out of reach before she could focus on any one of them. She had a feeling it was better that way, and with that thought came full awareness. Maddie shot upright, breathing hard.
