CHAPTER 53 Steadman drove the van, weaving between the sporadic late night traffic, staying well back to avoid notice as he followed Rafferty’s directions. The air inside the vehicle smelled stale, the humidity of it clinging to his skin like oil. He longed to open a window but wanted to make sure he could hear every word of Jamieson’s exchange with Eddie and he was afraid the breeze might interfere. His stomach coiled in a tight knot and he gritted his teeth, then caught himself at it and tried to relax. The plan was working. Jamieson knew how to conduct her end of it and get out.
