CHAPTER 5

ERMIS I stood up from the bed and checked the time. At 3 am, I headed downstairs. The entire place was dark and quiet. I don't stay in the pack house because, frankly, I really enjoy my privacy. Deciding to do my routine run, I shifted to my midnight black wolf, running past the pack house and feeling the early morning breeze on my fur. I howled. I love this form because it's very relaxing, and my senses are heightened. A lot of people are still sleeping except those stationed at the pack's border. Nevan, my beta and best friend, wanted to work at the border, but I instructed him to go to bed with his mate, Hazel, and their pups. I reduced my stride as I was nearing a lake. I looked at my reflection and that of the moon. Oh, Moon Goddess help me please, I'm tired of being alone. Ever since my parents died in a rogue attack, I shut the world out except Nevan, of course. I don't go to meetings and all those sh*ts. I don't want their fake sympathy. It hurts so bad to have a family you love so much, and it's taken away from you overnight. I don't have siblings and I don't have a mate, yet everyone has except me. What did I do to deserve such punishment? I tried getting into a relationship with Mira, hoping to make her Luna, but at the first opportunity she had, she cheated on me with an ordinary park member. It's been over five years now, but I haven't gotten into any other relationship. She keeps trying to get me back, but I'm done. If the Moon Goddess doesn't deem me worthy of bestowing a mate upon me, I would die without a mate and pups and the next alpha would be Nevan's son. That's what I have decided. People only see the outside, they see me as the Invincible Alpha with an Inviolable pack, but they don't know how much I'm hurting inside, and I will want it to remain that way. "Good morning Alpha". I heard Nevan's mind link pulling me away from my thoughts as he approached me in his wolf form. "Up already? Nevan" "Yes, Alpha, it's after 4 already" he replied. Really? I was so lost in thought I didn't realize that time had gone this far. "How are Hazel and the pups?” "They are fine, still sleeping though" he added with a chuckle. I love the way his eyes light up when he thinks about his family. "As they should" I thought, with a wolfish grin, "The annual Alpha's council meeting is coming up soon", the thought of which made me groan inwardly. "I can't hold them off this time, they complained seriously about your continuous absence. I understand your plight, but I can't do much anymore. You have to attend this meeting," he continued. "Which pack is hosting it?" I asked because that would determine whether I would go or not. "Crescent Canyon" he replied, Alpha Finn's pack. He was friends with my parents when they were alive, and he is one of the few I can tolerate. "It's settled then, we are going to Crescent Canyon." We continued the rest of our run in silence, getting to the pack house. We shifted and went inside. "Alpha". They greeted me in unison as I got inside. "How are you all doing this morning?" they responded that they were okay, and I walked towards the dining area. "Ermis, Ermis!!" my wolf stirred in irritation as I heard the voice "What is it this morning, Mira?" Irritation seeping from my voice "Babe, I just wanted to talk to you, I miss you so much" she said, pouting as she stretched her hand to touch my chest. I swatted her hands away from me and said "it's Alpha to you, don't you ever try to touch me again, and I'm not in the mood for your disturbances, I have work to do". I walked away not even caring to look back at her or how she felt. "This is all your fault" my wolf, Roy, said in my head, "if you had kept yourself for our mate, we wouldn't have been in this mess". He snarled at me "I've told you times without numbers that I'm sorry, I was horny and lonely, and she was very available. I also promised that I wouldn't have anything to do with her anymore, didn't I?" I asked, but he just blocked the mind link. Sighing, I went on with the rest of my day, trying as much as possible to tidy up my duties in preparation for my journey to Crescent Canyon.
