Chapter 1 “Piper are you even listening to me?” The warm rays of the sun filtered through the open window mixing with the soft September breeze and the first hints of autumn. Piper sighed as the car whipped through traffic and headed to the countryside. She knew her mother meant well with this little pep talk but she really wasn’t in the mood for it. “No not really.” She replied as she tucked her long pumpkin colored hair behind her ear and stared out the window. “Look, I know you were not excited about this move. I know you feel like we up routed you and moved you across the country away from your friends and lifestyle but you need to give the place a chance. Look at how beautiful it is here. There is a community college on the other side of the town for when you decide on a path. I know you miss your friends but this is a fresh start for us all. What better way to jumpstart being an adult after graduation then to start somewhere new?” Mom was definitely long winded today. Piper tried not to give her parents too hard of a time. See she was adopted. Her parents couldn’t, and still can’t, conceive a child of their own. They had started to talk about adoption and fostering, but it was so expensive and they had just spent their savings on fertility treatments. Mom volunteered at a shelter and late one night as she was leaving she found a small bundle on the front steps Yup, you guessed it, that small bundle was me. She took me straight to the hospital and the next morning filed emergency paperwork with the state to foster them adopt. A week later her and my dad brought me home and the rest is history. “I know where you are coming from mom, but I just need some time to adjust. We literally went from living in Boston to nowhere Wolf Hollow, Maine. Do you have any idea how unnerving the quiet is?” I turned my emerald green eyes to my mother as I heard her chuckle at me. “Well hopefully the surprise your father and I have for you will make things a little easier for the transition” my mother smiled at me. She is always such a warm person with her rich chocolate colored hair, warm honey eyes and thousand watt smile. My mother can light up the darkest room just by walking into it. She wears her heart in there smile and in her eyes. “You do know that you and don’t need to get some big surprise just because I moved out to the sticks with you, right? I mean I did make the decision to come with you.” My eyes widened as we pulled up to what could only be described as a castle. On the front lawn sat a black soft top jeep with a for sale sign in the window. And my father was standing next to it.
