Prologue: Rough Childhood
"Mia! Nuri! You're going to be late for school!"
Our mother called for us from the stairway. I was already sitting on the top step, waiting for my older sister, Nuri. She was my ride to school since she had her license, and we were finally in the same school. As always, Nuri took forever in the bathroom, plastering makeup on her beautiful face. I have even told her she should use her magic. It would make the task go by faster. Nuri felt that doing it by hand would increase her talents and allow her to appreciate her own craftsmanship.
My mom noticed I was sitting on the step after calling for us and smiled while shaking her head. "Makeup?" I nodded, and she just chuckled. "Nuri! Hurry up! You're beautiful enough!" She said before blowing a kiss at me and walking to the kitchen.
My sister groaned and rolled her eyes as she finally exited the bathroom. "I know I'm beautiful. Nothing wrong with enhancing the masterpiece you created, Mother." It was my turn to snicker at her reply to our mother. "You want me to do your make tomorrow? Then you and I can take over the school tomorrow." I just smiled at her before heading down to the kitchen. There was no point in wearing makeup unless it was to cover the marks I got from being bullied. I didn't want my family to know about it.
Our parents were waiting for us in the kitchen. Mom was finishing our lunch boxes, and Dad was shuffling his paperwork. Our father was the first to notice us and smile from ear to ear. "Oh look, honey, it's your two masterpieces." He said, winking at us both.
We giggled as he came over and kissed us both on the forehead. "You ready for school, my Reese's pieces?" We both nodded before he went back to his papers. "Daddy, am I still welcome to intern for you this summer?" Nuri asked as she grabbed toast from the plate of food on the counter.
I took my plate of food Mom made after hugging her from behind. She just patted my head as I ate. "Of course, my lovely Hersey kiss." He said without looking but was smirking.
Our father is a Dragon shifter. He never once showed us his eyes when they shimmered. It was his tell, after all. He couldn't hide anything from us when they shone so brightly. So, his avoidance of eye contact meant he was up to something. Nuri was smiling also, which meant this internship was unrelated to work.
Not surprising, Since Nuri was officially a full-fledged Mage now. As traditions go, she needed to find her familiar shifter or creature. For our family, it was always a dragon. "You two are going to be late." My mother reminded us as she snapped me out of my thoughts.
We ate as much as possible before giving our parents hugs and kisses while grabbing our lunches. Nuri and I raced to the car and headed to Taurus Academy, hidden deep in the forest of Vermont. My older sister was a Senior, and I was a Freshman. Normally, she could have caught me getting bullied, but Seniors tend to ignore the freshman. So I doubted she would have seen it.
When I noticed we were far enough from the school, I turned to my sister. "Mind dropping me off here? I want to walk the rest of the way." Nuri looked at me, confused, but never argued with me. However, she decided to this time because I would be late if I walked. I didn't mind since it meant I would avoid being bullied immediately.
"Sis, why do you always have me drop you off and never take you to campus? I'm not ashamed to have you as my sister. I'm not like most seniors."
I wished telling her would solve all my problems, but I felt I needed to handle this alone. So I just lied to get her to stop questioning me. "It's not that, Sis. I know you love me and are proud to be my awesome big sister. I want to work on my stamina. So I am ready when I get my powers." I said as she sighed heavily.
"So you're okay with being late? All so you can be ready when your powers come? You know, you suck at lying." She said but still pulled over anyway. "I hope you'll tell me the truth one day, Mia. I can help you if you need it." I hugged her before I ran out of the car so I wouldn't cave and tell her everything.
"I'll see you later, sis, at lunch, and I know you always got my back."
Nuri smiled at me before I started walking towards the school. She waited a moment before driving off ahead of me. Once she was out of sight, I sighed and stopped walking. It was my first year, and I was already failing my chances of perfect attendance because of bullies. All because I didn't get my powers like all the other witch mages at thirteen. I even had possible Familiars avoiding or bullying me because I was just a human.
I took a deep breath before running to campus to ensure I was only a few minutes late. Thankfully, they didn't have those gates that locked when school was in session. So made sneaking into the building accessible. "You think coming in late is going to spare you?" I froze when I got to my locker and heard Amelia's voice. I slowly turned around to look at the pale, pink-haired girl leaning against the lockers.
Amelia was one of my bullies who, I swear, wanted to see me gone. She had her arms crossed as she gave me a sinister smirk. "Hi, Amelia. Is there something I could help you with?" I asked, shoving my hands in my front pants pocket to hide my trembling. A hand slammed on the locker behind me, causing me to jump in fear and turn to see Zane. A dark skin, tall teenager with a buzz cut towered over me as he smirked.
"We just want to play with our favorite little human."
His words sent me chills as I could see his emerald eye shimmering with evil thoughts. Another tall teenage male with tan skin, dreadlocks, and steel blue eyes stood behind Zane. He looked like he didn't want to be here but was holding a phone up like he was planning to record something. I was about to say something when Amelia slammed my head into my locker with wind magic. My head was pounding from the impact, but I was still coherent enough to hear Zane and Amelia laughing.
My attention went to the guy behind Zane when the phone flashlight turned on. I felt myself mentally shutting down when I realized he was Zane's bonded werewolf familiar, Ryan. He only recorded Amelia and Zane's bullying when they planned to bully me physically.
I instantly gasped for air when Zane's hand gripped my neck, enough to nearly crush my windpipe, stealing back my attention. Zane was an earth mage, as Amelia was an air mage, which allowed him to have hulk level strength. As if Zane was a werewolf, but he was only borrowing those abilities from his bonded familiar. "Haha, she f*****g turning blue!" Amelia laughed as I tried to grab Zane's hands. Yet, that only made his grip tighten more.
"Come on, little human. I know you got more fight in you than that." He chuckled as he spoke. My vision was starting to blur when I heard growling. "Enough, Zane! You don't want to get kicked out of school for killing her." Ryan finally spoke up, resulting in Zane sending me into the lockers across from us.
My vision slowly returned as I coughed for air. Only enough, though, for me to see Zane attack Ryan for daring to talk back to him. On the other hand, Amelia turned towards me and used her air magic to slam me down to the floor. "Who cares if she dies? The principal will cover it for us anyway. She is just a useless human."
Amelia would be ecstatic about my death. The smirk on her lips made my fear grow even more because I believed she truly wanted me dead. She came closer to me and took a deep breath. At the same time, I felt the air in my lungs leaving my body and started to struggle to breathe. I reached out to her, trying to stop her, but a sexy, pale teenage boy moved with inhuman speed and slugged Amelia dead square in the face.
Just in time to have Ryan send Zane the opposite way, ending their fight. "Mia, you, okay?" The pale teen boy with long, pale purple hair leaned down in front of me. "I am now, thanks to you, Hazel." He warmly smiled as he helped me get back up. "Oliver, get her to the nurse to ensure she's okay," Ryan said, making Hazel frown at the use of his dead name since Hazel was transitioning into becoming a woman.
I just patted Hazel's head, getting his smile returned before she helped me up. "Thanks, Ryan, for letting me know," he said, leaving me confused as he escorted me to the Nurse. I later learned that Ryan wasn't recording their bullying but was sending a video to Hazel, my best friend, for help.
Hazel always waited for me to come to school from that day on. My sister would tease me that I might have multiple Familiars on the many drives home. Yet, this was the only way to keep the bullying verbal instead of physical. It was refreshing knowing some shifters didn't care that I was human, though. If only she knew they were my friends who didn't like how witch mages treated me for being powerless.
I really wished, though, that I would come into my powers. So, by eighteen, I could protect myself and those who stood by me against the witch mages and their familiars. That would be amazing.
