Prologue: The Unbidden Call
The biting wind howled like a banshee, whipping Alex's face with icy needles of snow. His lungs burned, each gasp a painful struggle against the thin, frigid air. Yet, he pressed on, driven by that insatiable hunger for adventure that had always defined him. Everest, the roof of the world, stood as the ultimate challenge, and Alex, ever the explorer, was determined to conquer it. Suddenly, the world beneath him gave way. A treacherous crevasse, hidden beneath a deceptively smooth layer of snow, opened up like a hungry maw. Alex plunged into the abyss, a strangled cry dying in his throat. His life flashed before his eyes, a kaleidoscope of expeditions, discoveries, and near-death escapes. This time, he thought, his luck had finally run out. But instead of the bone-crushing impact he expected, Alex landed on something...soft? He cautiously opened his eyes, expecting darkness, yet finding himself bathed in an ethereal, almost otherworldly light. The air buzzed with an energy he'd never encountered, ancient and raw, tingling against his skin like static electricity. He sat up, bewildered, taking in the scene around him. Towering snow-capped peaks pierced the sky, yet they were unlike any mountains he'd seen before. The familiar silhouette of Everest was gone, replaced by jagged, alien forms that seemed to defy gravity itself. A sense of displacement, of being utterly out of place, washed over him. This wasn't his world, not anymore. "Where...where am I?" he mumbled, his voice hoarse and barely audible over the wind's mournful cry. A low growl echoed through the mountains, sending a shiver down his spine. From the swirling mists emerged a figure that confirmed his worst fears – a werewolf, a creature of myth and legend. Its hulking form, covered in thick fur, radiated power, and its eyes, like molten gold, seemed to pierce into his very soul. Terror, primal and paralyzing, rooted Alex to the spot. He could only stare, his mind reeling, as the creature approached him. This was it, he thought, the end of his journey, devoured by a monster in a world beyond comprehension. Yet, as the werewolf drew closer, Alex noticed something unexpected. There was no bloodlust in its gaze, no savage hunger. Instead, he saw curiosity, intelligence, even a hint of...warmth? "Who are you," the creature rumbled, its voice a deep baritone that resonated in Alex's chest, "and why do you trespass on our lands?" To his astonishment, Alex understood the words. It was as if the strange energy in the air translated the language for him. "I...I'm Alex," he stammered, his voice shaking, "an explorer...I don't know how I got here. I was climbing Mount Everest..." The werewolf tilted its head, a flicker of surprise crossing its golden eyes. "Everest...a name from a time long forgotten," it replied, its voice laced with a strange melancholy. "You are not from this world, are you?" Alex could only nod, his mind a whirlwind of questions. "This is the land of the Lupine," the creature continued, "and I am Lupin, leader of this pack. Welcome to our world, Alex." A spark of hope ignited within Alex. Perhaps, in this strange and unknown land, he wasn't entirely alone.
