It's a deal

“Hi Nicolle, how are you?”

“Umm, I am good Mrs. Colton.”

Alex shot a look towards me but didn’t say anything. I could see the uneasiness in his eyes. I tried to fake a smile.

“Good. Where is Alex?”

“He is driving. I will let him know that you called.” I tried to cut the call. I don’t want to call this double face **** I can’t say anything, she is Alex's mom.

“Oh no, I actually called to talk to you.” Let me know when you are alone. I want to discuss something with you.”

“Ok. I will call you back.” What does she want with me? Alex parked the RV near a parking spot on CA1. He looked at me.

“What was she saying?” He was trying to sound as if he is angry but I know he is anxious.

“Nothing. She asked how we are and that she will call later.” I lied to him. I want to know why she called me and then I will tell Alex about this.

“Just, don’t engage yourself much. I don’t want you to have any contact with her.” He said in a firm tone and I nodded.

“Ok.”

“You agreed?” He is surprised and I know why. If I didn’t know about her real face, I would have argued with Alex, saying that she cares a lot about us and blah blah. But I know how she is. Alex is trying to protect me and I respect his decision.

“Yeah. You said you don't want it and Ok. I won’t. I think I have started trusting you more than before.” I said with a smile.

He looked happy and gave his hypnotizing smile. The parking area had a good view, so we stayed there for some time and continued towards LA.

I called Mrs. Colton when Alex was busy getting essentials from a mall.

“Hi, you asked me to call you.” I tried to sound as normal as I could. But what I heard next shook me.

“Drop the act. I know you know everything.”

“What do you mean?” I am not sure I heard it right.

“Nicolle, I know what you did that day. I found your little microphone after a few days in my closet. I was just waiting for you to come but it looks like you have planned to keep Alex away from me.”

F**k, I forgot about the microphone I put in Alex's suit. When Alex was wearing it back, it must have dropped. Great now she knows. I was silent so she continued.

“I just called to let you know, don’t cross my path or it will not be good for you.”

Is she threatening me?

“Oh, what will you do MOM?”

“You don’t know me. I can do anything. For example, I can simply ask Alex to leave you and he will obey me.”

“Try it.” I know Alex has promised me, so I am not afraid anymore.

I heard her laugh and then she said. “Ok, let me show you how much of a hold I have on him. At 5:00 pm today PST of course, I will call him. Do whatever you want, but he will attend my call.”

“He will not pick up your call. I will not let him do it."

“Ok, it’s a deal then. If he picks up my call, leave Alex for his own good and if he doesn’t, I will never come in between you two. You don't know what I will do to Alex if you decide to cross me. And don't you dare tell him anything about this call. There is a reason why Alex is still silent even after all that has happened to him.”

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t you think why Alex has not shared anything with anyone? There must be something, right? And Alex knows it too well. Let me give me an example of what I can make him do. The day he went for dinner with you and Shelly, he got a wound on his shoulder. And then when he was sick, he got another wound on the same shoulder. Do you know how?”

“I know he was hurt; I didn’t know then it was you who hit him.”

“Oh no, I have not hit him since he was 15 years old. I just asked him to do it. He did that to himself. All I had to do was just say the word. He broke the table, and did the rest to himself. I was not satisfied the second time, so he dug the glass deeper. And when I said it’s good, he left the room.”

“You are a monster.”

“Whatever I am, I hope you got the idea. I can force him to kill himself, Nicolle, so don’t play smart with me if you want him alive. I will call him at 5 and you will know your place.”

“It’s a deal.”

“Great. Wait for 5 then. And please don’t cheat by switching off his mobile, or keep it on silent.”

“I won’t” and I hung up the call.

I won’t lie. I am scared that Alex might take the call. What will happen then? No, I can’t let that happen. But how will I stop him from taking the call? It’s not like I can tell him what happened.

Alex:

I came back from the mall, and Nicolle was lost somewhere. She was so lost that she didn’t even see that I was sitting near her and looking at her for the past 5 minutes.

“You came back?” She finally came back to earth.

“Yes. I did but you took long enough.”

She looked puzzled but then realized what I was saying.

“I was just thinking about something.”

“I can see that, mind telling me?”

She pressed her lips and then looked at me. She had an expression on her face and I was unable to read it. Was she scared, lost, sad, worried? I don’t know.

“I have something to talk to you about, but I don’t think I should say it now. How about we take lunch, have some rest and then we can talk about it in the evening.”
