Letters to No One
Preface: The Text Message
“I’m not going to talk to you anymore. Don’t take it personally, I just really need to focus on me and Michaela right now.”
Who breaks up with somebody in a text message? I mean really, what is wrong with our generation. There are three conversations you should always have in person: Proposals, Babies, and Break-ups. The reason relationships don’t last anymore is because we are too busy to spend time together. Quality time becomes a quick phone call, and long phone conversations become short, abbreviated text messages.
I guess I can understand why he did it. He’s a coward, plain and simple. How else do you describe someone who lets himself be controlled by a psychotic ex-girlfriend and then takes her back the minute she gives him an ultimatum? There’s no way a guy like that could face having to break up with someone to their face.
The really messed up part is, I was still upset that I was going to lose him. This guy had been one of my closest friends for a long time. Not to mention, I never thought I could land someone like him. Joel was 6' 2" of farm-hardened muscle with a smile that could light up a room. Everytime his booming laugh filled up a silence, his eyes would sparkle the incredible gray-blue of a mid day storm. His blonde hair had just a hint of strawberry, the way red heads can get when they spend 12 hours a day in the Florida sun working with horses. His beard and full sleeve tattoos made him look intimidating until you got to know him. I've never again met a grown man who had the almost child-like innocence and love for everyone he met like Joel did. He was a lot to lose for any woman. Especially me. I'm Sam. 4'11" and always a little too chubby with eyes that never can decide if they want to be green or brown. My dark hair makes it easy for me to melt into a corner. Nobody notices me, which is usually how I like it. Nobody would ever expect a man like Joel to notice me, that's for sure.
It had seemed like a no-brainer for us to get together. It hadn’t even bothered me that we had started our relationship by cheating on his then-girlfriend. After all, men aren’t so hard to hang onto, right? All you have to do is treat them like people and love them. That’s enough to keep anyone. I was in for a rude awakening.
