Chapter 18The next morning, Percy drove to Clapham to intercept his brother and young George. The handover went smoothly, and from then on, George adapted blithely to his new surroundings. It helped that he regarded all the incumbents of the Little Chelsea villa as his playmates and had a doting William and Martha at his beck and call. Percy was heartened that when Georgie spoke of the family he had left at Wallington, it was always in terms of how much he would have to tell about his Chelsea escapade.
Percy’s concern for George’s happiness was further eased by an immediate and grateful note from George’s mother, full of anticipation at being able to visit her son without having to venture into the depths of the countryside together with infrequent and indirect transport.
