Chapter 6On entering White’s Club on St. James Street the following afternoon, Percy immediately realized his error.
He had slept late into the morning and had woken feeling refreshed and calm. He had snatches of memory about the night before, especially Jo’s kind intervention at the Argyll Rooms. Afterwards, Percy vaguely recalled arriving at a Covent Garden tavern, where Jo had introduced Percy to his friend. In appearance, he was a funny little man, with unmemorable features and certainly not a gentleman. However, he displayed perfect courtesy as he and Jo tried and failed to engage Percy in coherent conversation before walking him home to Mount Street.
