Chapter 1: The Bride Vanished
"Lillian!"
The terrified scream echoed through the bridal suite.
Lillian Carter looked up from the bouquet she was arranging just as the wedding planner burst into the room. The woman's face had turned completely pale.
"Where's Sophia?" she asked between heavy breaths.
Lillian frowned.
"She was here five minutes ago. Didn't she go to the makeup room?"
The planner shook her head.
"We've searched everywhere."
Lillian's smile slowly faded.
"What do you mean?"
"She's gone."
For a second, the room became silent.
The bridesmaids stopped talking.
The hairstylist froze.
Even the music drifting in from the church suddenly felt distant.
Lillian laughed nervously.
"Stop joking. Sophia wouldn't disappear on her wedding day."
"I'm not joking."
The planner's voice trembled.
"Mr. Ashford has already arrived. The guests are waiting. The media is outside."
Lillian's heartbeat quickened.
Her identical twin sister had dreamed of this day for years.
Sophia loved expensive dresses, flashing cameras, and grand celebrations. There was no way she would run away now.
"I'm calling her."
Lillian quickly took out her phone.
One ring.
Two rings.
Three.
No answer.
She called again.
Still nothing.
A strange feeling settled in her stomach.
Something wasn't right.
Just then...
Her own phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
A deep, distorted voice spoke.
"Don't scream."
Lillian's blood ran cold.
"Who are you?"
"I have your sister."
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
"What?"
"Look outside."
Her legs felt weak as she walked toward the large church window.
Across the street...
A black van sat beneath a row of trees.
Its tinted window slowly rolled down.
Inside...
Sophia.
Her wrists were tied.
Her mouth was covered with tape.
Tears streamed down her face as she desperately shook her head.
Lillian's heart nearly stopped.
"Sophia!"
The van window rolled back up.
The voice on the phone chuckled.
"If anyone hears you..."
"...she dies."
Lillian covered her mouth to stop herself from screaming.
"What do you want?"
"You."
"What?"
"The wedding must happen."
"I don't understand."
"The groom must never know the bride disappeared."
Lillian frowned.
"That's impossible."
"No."
The man laughed softly.
"It's very possible."
"You're identical twins."
Her breathing became uneven.
"No."
"I can't."
"You can."
"And you will."
"If the ceremony is canceled..."
"...we'll send your sister home in a coffin."
The line went dead.
Lillian stared at the phone.
Her entire body was shaking.
---
Ten minutes later...
She sat alone in the empty dressing room.
Sophia's wedding dress hung in front of her.
Her twin's veil rested on the chair.
The room suddenly felt suffocating.
"No..."
"There has to be another way."
The door opened.
An elegant woman walked inside.
"Miss Carter?"
Lillian quickly wiped away her tears.
"Yes?"
"I'm Evelyn Ashford."
Lillian immediately recognized the woman.
Damien Ashford's grandmother.
The head of the Ashford family.
Her sharp eyes studied Lillian carefully.
For several long seconds...
She didn't speak.
Then she whispered,
"You look exactly like her."
Lillian lowered her head.
"They kidnapped Sophia."
Evelyn's face stiffened.
"What?"
Lillian explained everything in a trembling voice.
The phone call.
The black van.
The threat.
When she finished...
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"This cannot become public."
Lillian looked at her in disbelief.
"My sister is in danger!"
"I know."
"But if today's wedding collapses, the Ashford family will become tomorrow's headlines."
Lillian couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"My sister could die!"
Evelyn stepped closer.
"And if those people are watching this church..."
"...canceling the wedding may kill her."
The room fell silent.
Lillian felt trapped.
One choice...
Could destroy two families.
The other...
Could cost Sophia's life.
---
Meanwhile...
The massive church doors opened.
Damien Ashford stepped inside.
Every conversation stopped.
Every camera turned toward him.
Standing over six feet tall, dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, he walked with quiet confidence that demanded attention.
His cold expression never changed.
Employees lowered their heads.
Guests whispered.
"The Ashford heir..."
"He looks even better than the magazines."
"They say he's never smiled during a business meeting."
"They also say he's never lost one."
Damien ignored every word.
His eyes moved to the altar.
The bride was late.
Again.
He glanced at his watch.
His voice was calm.
"Five more minutes."
"If she doesn't appear..."
"...the wedding is over."
---
Back inside the bridal suite...
Lillian stared at herself in the mirror.
She was wearing Sophia's wedding dress.
The veil covered most of her face.
Anyone who didn't know them well would never notice the difference.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry..."
She whispered.
"I'm so sorry, Sophia."
The wedding planner knocked.
"It's time."
Her legs refused to move.
Then her phone buzzed again.
A photo appeared on the screen.
Sophia.
Still tied up.
A knife rested against her neck.
A message followed.
Walk down the aisle.
Or she dies.
Lillian closed her eyes.
She took one deep breath.
Then another.
Finally...
She stepped out of the room.
The church doors slowly opened.
Hundreds of guests stood.
The music began.
Every eye turned toward the bride.
Lillian forced herself to walk.
One step.
Two steps.
Three.
Her heart pounded louder than the wedding march.
She reached the altar.
Damien looked at her for the first time.
Something flashed across his eyes.
Not love.
Suspicion.
The priest smiled warmly.
"We are gathered here today..."
The ceremony began.
Minutes later...
The priest looked at Damien.
"Do you take this woman to be your lawful wife?"
"I do."
The priest turned to Lillian.
"And do you take Damien Ashford to be your lawful husband?"
Lillian felt tears burning her eyes.
For Sophia...
She whispered,
"...I do."
The priest smiled.
"I now pronounce you—"
"Stop."
Damien's cold voice cut through the church.
He slowly turned to face her.
Then, loud enough for every guest to hear, he said,
"You're not Sophia."
