Episode 1: The Cue and the Contract
Episode 1: The Cue and the Contract
The air in "The King's Cue" was thick with the scent of chalk dust, old wood, and ambition. Adenike moved through it not as a patron, but as its undisputed, if unofficial, champion. At twenty-two, her life was the felt-covered table, her language the sharp clack of a perfect break. She was resetting a table when the door opened, flooding the dim hall with a blade of afternoon sun. A man stepped in, and the room stilled. He was not their usual clientele. His suit was tailored, his posture erect, his gaze scanning the room with an unnerving directness. He carried a small, polished wooden box.
Adenike’s employer, Mr. Okafor, scurried out, wiping his hands on his apron. "Sir! You've found us."
The man’s eyes landed on Adenike, lingering on the cue stick resting against her shoulder as if it were a part of her. "I have," he said, his voice a calm, low baritone. "I am Dare Adebayo."
Mr. Okafor beckoned her over. "Adenike. This is Mr. Adebayo. He… has come for you."
Her heart stuttered. "For me?"
Dare Adebayo’s eyes, the colour of rich earth, held no mockery. "Miss Adenike Oladele," he stated, not asked. "I have a proposition. A business arrangement, of a sort." He opened the wooden box. Inside, nestled on velvet, was a single, flawless diamond ring. "Our families have agreed. I am here to propose a marriage."
Adenike’s world tilted. "Marriage? But… we have never met."
"A formality," Dare replied, his voice even. He retrieved a small, sepia-toned photograph from his waistcoat pocket and handed it to her. It was a picture of her, taken months ago outside the market, a candid shot where she was laughing, unaware. "I have watched from a distance. I know of your skill here, your integrity. My family needs a strong partner for me. Yours needs the security I can provide. It is a logical union."
Adenike stared at the photograph, then at the ring, then at the man before her. This was a picture marriage, an arrangement she'd heard of but never imagined for herself. Her life was one of calculated angles and precise force. This felt like a wild, unpredictable shot in the dark. But looking into Dare's serious, unwavering eyes, she felt a strange pull, a curiosity that outweighed her fear. Slowly, she nodded.
"I accept."
