What Happened Before
Macey went to land when she came of age, which a lot of kelpies do. She lived with her brothers until an odd mist distracted her and she ended up semi-kidnapped by three men who'd end up her lovers and fellow Wardens, Cam, Flint, and Jared. It didn't take long for her to warm to them, though she was less keen on the Warden thing. The last thing she wanted was to have to save the world. They met one of the other Wardens - Izban, who was looking for his girlfriend (who happened to be the Sixth Warden) and Macey ended up annoyed by just about everything he did. Not that it mattered, she got kidnapped before she could spend any quality time with Izban.
Trapped in the prison of a castle controlled by the Mahoun/Voice (an evil black blob), Macey meets the sixth Warden - Amber. Who it turned out could shift into a huge-dragon-snake thing but still had a tail in her human form. Not that it's noticeable, Amber normally wraps it around her waist and covers it in clothing because mean kids at her school kept ripping it off and it was easier to keep it hidden. The two Wardens escape and are finally reunited with the others. There's lots of debate over what they should do and, to Macey's annoyance, Izban seems to be a fan of just leaving the world to rot. Eventually, they persuade him otherwise and the Wardens visit the Seelie and gain the Seventh Warden - a parasite that lives in Macey and is called Talia (though due to a prophecy given to her by the cù-sìth Sharara (cat-man’s sister), Macey isn't allowed to tell anyone the name or else bad things will happen). They travel to St. Kilda and the original throne room of the Wardens. They do some magic and fix a few things, but then Macey nearly drowns (very embarrassing for a kelpie. She'll never live that one down.)
They meet a selkie called Rónán who soon catches Macey's eye and gets added to her collection, even though he isn't a Warden (the scandal! Though the Wardens aren't always in romantic relationships with one another.) Macey also learns that her heritage isn't what she thought it was - her Aunt Nessie is actually her mother!
They go about defeating some black ominous blobs and meeting some super-weird mythological creatures until Flint nearly dies and they go to London (where Jared nearly dies...oops) and they meet a daimon - Luc. He rivals bodiless Malan in being mysterious and vague, which means Macey gets angry quite frequently.
After some harrowing trials, Macey gets a flame from the lampads and gives it to Flint. While his magic gets restored, Macey also gets a bit of his fire magic - making her even more powerful. Hurray! And when she uses her markings to take control of all seven elements, she decides they are finally ready to take on the Mahoun.
While they are all waiting in their camp, a heavily injured man suddenly appears, claiming he’s Malan’s brother, Talon, and that Izban has freed him (yay!). Using the same hidden door Talon used to escape, their forces get into the castle, while Macey goes up to the main gate to confront the Mahoun. After a bit of mental torture and torment, they fight with wooden staves (strange choice of weapons, right?) and luckily Luc appears to fight by Macey’s side. Sadly this wasn’t actually the Mahoun, just an impostor. In a cell, they find a nameless man who was the creator of the Mahoun. Macey lends him her power so that he can banish the Voice back to where he’s come from. She almost dies, but then has some celebratory s*x with her Wardens. Fun times.
