Chapter 6: Secrets in the Shadows

Olivia’s POV The following days passed in a blur, a strange mix of normalcy and quiet tension. I found myself distracted—by my work, by the lingering thoughts of Tristan, and by the odd pull I couldn’t explain. I kept telling myself it was nothing. That he was just a guy I’d met by chance. That the connection I felt was nothing more than curiosity. But each time I saw him, whether it was at the café or even just passing him on the street, the pull became stronger. It wasn’t just physical—it was emotional, too. Like a part of me had always known him, and now that we were finally face to face, everything felt... off. This particular afternoon, I was at the bookshop, sorting through a new delivery of mystery novels when Sarah came in, her usual grin wide. “Guess who’s here?” she asked, her tone a mix of amusement and something else I couldn’t quite place. I froze for a moment. “Who?” “Tristan.” My heart skipped a beat, and I forced myself to act normal. “Oh. What’s he doing here?” “Looking for you, of course.” I tried to suppress a laugh, but my face warmed. “He’s not.” Sarah raised an eyebrow. “He is. He’s standing right outside. And trust me, he’s been staring at the door like he’s waiting for you to come out.” I felt a wave of unease rush over me. “I should—” Before I could finish my sentence, the bell above the door jingled. There he was, standing just inside the doorway with that same intense gaze. “Olivia,” he said quietly, his voice low but clear. I blinked, momentarily thrown off balance. “Tristan,” I said, trying to act casual. “What brings you by?” “I was hoping we could talk,” he said, stepping further into the shop. I glanced at Sarah, who was giving me an amused look before retreating to the back of the store. Tristan’s eyes softened, his usual intensity giving way to something a bit more vulnerable. “I know this is sudden, but I need to ask you something.” “Okay.” I felt a knot form in my stomach. “What is it?” He hesitated for a moment, his brow furrowing as if unsure how to phrase his thoughts. “I—” He paused again, like the words were stuck in his throat. Something about his unease made me feel uneasy, too. “Tristan, what’s going on?” He took a step closer, his gaze dropping to the floor for a moment. “I know you feel it too,” he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. I frowned, not sure what he meant. “Feel what?” “The pull. The connection.” His words hung in the air, and my heart started racing. “No, you’re wrong,” I said, trying to laugh it off, but it came out shaky. “There’s no connection.” He didn’t move, his eyes unwavering. “Olivia, you don’t understand. You’re my mate.” I froze, the world around me slowing to a crawl. Mate? That word echoed in my mind, and before I could say anything else, the front door of the shop opened again. I turned, seeing a man walk in—tall, with a strong build and dark features that made him look almost regal. His eyes locked onto Tristan’s immediately. “You found her, then,” the man said, his voice rich with authority. “Elias,” Tristan said, his posture shifting, his voice tight with a mix of tension and respect. The man—Elias, apparently—turned his attention to me. His eyes were sharp, assessing. “Olivia,” he said, his tone cold but not unfriendly. “I’m Elias, Tristan’s second-in-command. We need to talk.” I blinked, completely thrown off. “Talk about what?” Elias didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked at Tristan, his expression unreadable. Tristan sighed, stepping closer to me. “Olivia, please. I need you to understand. This is bigger than you and me.” I swallowed, still trying to process his words. “What are you talking about?” Elias took a step forward, his eyes never leaving mine. “You’re a part of something much older, Olivia. Something you’re not even aware of.” The room felt suddenly too small, the air too thick. I could feel my breath quickening, panic slowly creeping up. “Tristan, I don’t—what are you saying?” I stammered. He reached out, his hand just barely brushing mine. “I don’t want to scare you, Olivia. But there’s a world you don’t know about. A world I’m part of. And now, so are you.” --- Tristan’s POV It wasn’t easy, coming back here. Back to the place that had felt like home for so long, but now seemed strange—distant. I could feel the weight of Elias’s gaze on me, his usual confidence now laced with concern. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting when I’d come to Olivia’s bookshop. Maybe I’d thought it would be easier to explain—to show her that what was happening between us wasn’t just some fleeting thing. But the moment she’d looked at me with that mixture of confusion and fear, my wolf had howled. She was mine. And I had to make her understand, no matter how much it terrified her. I could see it in her eyes—she was scared. This wasn’t what she’d expected, and it certainly wasn’t what I’d wanted for her. “You need to be careful, Tristan,” Elias said quietly. “If she’s your mate, and if the rogues know about her—” “I know,” I said, cutting him off. My heart ached at the thought of anything happening to Olivia, and the rogue threat was very real. I wasn’t just worried about the pack anymore. I was worried about her. “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her,” I said, my voice hardening. But Elias wasn’t done. “You need to bring her into this world, Tristan. Before the others do it for you.” I closed my eyes, the weight of his words pressing down on me. I didn’t want to drag Olivia into this dangerous world. But I didn’t have a choice anymore. --- Olivia’s POV I felt a chill run through me. The pull. The connection. My mind was reeling. But one thing stood out above all the confusion: Tristan’s eyes—filled with raw emotion. I’d never seen him like this before. Vulnerable. Desperate. And I realized, for the first time, just how deep this went. I opened my mouth to speak, but the words felt stuck in my throat. I couldn’t make sense of anything. “I need to go,” I finally managed to whisper, stepping back. Tristan’s hand shot out, grabbing my wrist gently. “Please, Olivia.” His voice was full of pain, and it hit me harder than I expected. “I need time,” I said quickly, my pulse racing. He let go, his gaze never leaving mine. “I’ll give you all the time you need.” But I knew, deep down, this wasn’t something I could ignore any longer. The truth was inescapable, and whether I was ready or not, my life was about to change forever. --- Elias’s POV I watched as Tristan let Olivia go, the tension in his shoulders undeniable. “You did the right thing,” I said quietly. He didn’t respond, his focus entirely on Olivia as she walked away, her footsteps echoing through the quiet shop. “We’ll protect her,” I added, my voice firm. But I wasn’t so sure. Not with the rogues closing in. And not with the uncertainty hanging over us. The real battle was just beginning.
