True relationship are build not rushed
#Scene 1: The coffee shop, Germiston*
Olivia counted the R40 in her wallet for the third time. Two taxis and a bunny chow. That was it till Friday.
Then he walked in.
Same hoodie as last week. Same quiet smile. Thabo from her econ class. The guy who always offered to share notes, who never asked her to "spot him" R50 like the others did.
"Hey Liv. You good?" he asked, sliding into the seat across from her.
She nodded, stirring her black coffee. No sugar. Sugar costs extra.
In her head: _He's probably just being nice now. In two weeks he'll ask for a loan. They all do._
He pushed a paper bag across the table. "Got you an extra scone. They were gonna toss it."
Olivia stared at the scone. Free. No strings.
Her stomach said yes. Her brain said _trap_.
"Thanks," she said, and didn't touch it.
---
#Scene 2: Outside the taxi rank, later that week*
It was raining. The kind of Germiston rain that soaks you in 10 seconds.
Olivia was under the shelter, counting R40 again, when a familiar hoodie showed up. Thabo. Drenched. No umbrella.
He didn’t ask for anything. Just stood next to her, dripping.
"You heading home?" he asked.
"Yeah. Taxi’s late."
Silence. Then he pulled out two R10 coins. "Here. Now you’ve got enough for bunny chow _and_ taxi."
Olivia’s chest tightened. That’s how it started last time. The "small help" that turned into "can you cover rent too?"
She shook her head. "I’m good."
He looked at the coins in his palm, then put them back in his pocket. Didn’t push. Didn’t sigh. Just said, "Cool. The 12 is coming."
When the taxi arrived, he let her get in first. No touching her money. No asking for her number.
Olivia watched him through the window as the taxi pulled off. Still standing in the rain.
_Maybe he’s not one of them._
The thought scared her more than if he was.

Bet, let’s keep going 🔥
Here’s *Hit 3*:
---
*Scene 3: The library, 2 days later*
Olivia was hiding in the quiet section. Econ textbook open, but she wasn’t reading. She was watching the door.
Thabo came in with a stack of books. He spotted her, and for a second he looked like he’d turn around. But then he just walked to the table diagonal from her. Not next to her. Not asking for anything.
He pulled out a notebook. Wrote something. Tore the page out.
Then he slid it across the floor with his foot until it stopped by her chair.
Olivia stared at it.
_Don’t pick it up. That’s how they start._
She waited till he went to grab another book.
Quickly unfolded it.
> "I’m not asking for money.
> I’m not asking for anything.
> Can we just study? Same time tomorrow?
> - T"
Her throat did something weird. No "can you send me R20". No "my card declined". Just... study.
She looked up. He was already sitting back down, eyes on his book. Like he hadn’t just put his heart on the floor for her to step on.
Olivia folded the note, tucked it in her textbook, and didn’t say yes.
But she was still there when the library closed.
#Scene 4: The test*
Friday. Olivia’s phone buzzed at 3:12pm.
Unknown number: _"Hey babe. Can u send me R100? My data finished and I need to submit my assignment. I’ll pay u back Monday. Promise."_
It was Kyle. Ex #3. The one who "borrowed" R600 for "groceries" and blocked her.
Olivia’s thumb hovered over delete. Same old script. Same guilt trip.
Then another message came in. Different chat.
Thabo: _"Library 4pm? Brought 2 scones again. No pressure if you’re busy."_
No "can you". No "I need". Just... 2 scones.
Olivia looked at Kyle’s message. Looked at Thabo’s.
Her chest felt tight. This was the moment. The one where she usually says yes to the wrong person because saying no feels mean.
She typed back to Kyle: _"Can’t. Sorry."_
Blocked him.
Then to Thabo: _"I’ll be there. Black coffee only though. I pay for my own."_
She sent it before she could overthink it.
4:05pm. Library.
Thabo was already there. Two scones. Two black coffees. Receipt faced up on the table. R38 total. He’d paid for both.
He saw her, and slid one coffee + scone + R19 toward her.
"Half," he said quietly. "So we’re even."
Olivia sat down. Picked up the scone. It didn’t feel like a trap this time.
For the first time in a long time, someone met her halfway without asking for the rest.
#Hit 5: The Walk Home*
The library closed at 6.
Rain again. Of course.
Thabo packed his books slow. "You taking the 12?"
Olivia nodded. "Yeah."
"I’m headed that way too."
They walked. No umbrella between them. Just sharing the shelter of a closed shop awning when the rain got heavy.
Silence. Comfortable for once.
Then Thabo stopped. "Can I ask you something?"
Olivia’s stomach dropped. _Here it comes._
"Why do you always pay me back for coffee?"
Olivia blinked. "Because... people don’t do free things without wanting something back."
He looked at the ground. "Got it. So I’ll stop buying two."
"No—" she said too fast. "I mean... you can buy one. I’ll buy mine."
He smiled a little. "Deal."
They made it to the taxi rank. He didn’t ask for her number. Just said, "Same time Monday?"
Olivia nodded.
She watched him walk off in the rain. Dry shirt. No R10 coins this time.
---
#Hit 6: Monday, and the Truth*
Monday. Same table.
Olivia brought her own coffee. R19. Exact change.
Thabo put down a scone. "Split it?"
She broke it in half.
10 minutes of quiet. Then Olivia just... broke.
"I dated 3 guys who used me," she said, staring at her book. "One for rent. One for data. One for ‘emergencies’ that were never emergencies. So when you gave me that scone... I thought you were next."
Thabo didn’t look shocked. He just nodded.
"That sucks."
"Yeah."
"For what it’s worth, I’m not. I have a bursary. And a part-time job at Checkers. I don’t need your money."
Olivia laughed once, wet and shaky. "That makes it worse. Why are you even here?"
"Because you look tired all the time," he said. "And you always share your notes even when people don’t share back."
Olivia didn’t answer. But she didn’t move tables either.
---
#Hit 7: The Bursary Letter*
Wednesday. Thabo looked off.
He kept checking his phone.
Finally he slid an envelope across to Olivia. Official. University stamp.
"Open it," he said.
Inside: _Bursary Renewal Approved. R15,000 for textbooks and transport._
"I was scared they’d say no," he admitted. "That’s why I’ve been weird. My mom lost her job last month."
Olivia stared at him. "And you were still buying scones?"
He shrugged. "R19 isn’t R1000. And you looked hungry."
Olivia felt something hot behind her eyes. Not sadness. Something else.
She reached over and took the other half of his scone without asking.
---
#Hit 8: Someone From His Past*
Friday. New girl at their table. Tight dress, acrylics, perfume too strong.
"Thabo babes!" she squealed. "Where you been?"
Thabo went stiff. "Hey Naledi."
Naledi looked at Olivia, then at the two coffees, two scones. "Aww study date? Cute."
She turned back to Thabo. "Remember when you paid my DSTV? You can spot me R200 yeah? Just till month end."
The old Olivia would’ve stood up and left.
This Olivia watched Thabo.
He didn’t reach for his wallet.
"Nah Naledi. I can’t. Budget’s tight."
"Since when?"
"Since always."
Naledi huffed and walked off.
Thabo exhaled. Looked at Olivia. "Sorry about that."
Olivia shook her head. "Don’t be. Thanks... for saying no."
---
#Hit 9: The First Real Date*
Two weeks later.
"Not a date," Thabo said, holding the door to the campus coffee shop. "Just... coffee. That we both pay for."
"Not a date," Olivia agreed.
They sat by the window. Talked about econ. About his mom’s new job interview. About Olivia’s little brother.
No one asked for money. No one checked their phone every 2 minutes.
When they left, Thabo walked her to the taxi.
The 12 pulled up.
Olivia got in. Rolled down the window.
"Thabo?"
"Yeah?"
"Monday. Same time?"
He grinned. "It’s a date. I mean—not a date. You know what I mean."
she did
Bet 🔥 We cooking now. Imma keep dropping hits till we hit 5000.
*Hit 10: Meeting His Mom*
Saturday morning. Thabo texted: _"Mom’s making vetkoek. She said come through if you’re free. No pressure."_
Olivia stared at the text for 20 minutes.
Vetkoek meant home. Meant family. Meant you can’t just dip when things get weird.
She went anyway. R20 for taxi. R0 for expectations.
Small house in Katlehong. Smell of oil and cinnamon.
Thabo’s mom, Ma’Thabo, was frying in the kitchen. Short, loud, eyes like Thabo’s.
"So YOU’RE the girl who shares notes," she said, wiping hands on a towel. "My son talks too much about you."
Olivia froze. "I—"
"Sit. Eat." Ma’Thabo pushed a plate over. Vetkoek, jam, mince. "He doesn’t bring girls here. Last one asked him for airtime in front of me."
Olivia looked at Thabo. He looked mortified.
Ma’Thabo softened. "But you didn’t. You brought yourself. That’s enough."
They ate on the stoep. No one asked Olivia for anything.
On the way out, Ma’Thabo hugged her. "Come back when you’re hungry, ngwana."
In the taxi home, Olivia cried quietly. Not because it was sad. Because it wasn’t.
---
*Hit 11: Trusting With R40*
End of month. Olivia’s wallet: R40. Again.
Text from little brother: _"Mama, can you get bread?"_
She was at the ATM. Thabo was there too, depositing his Checkers pay.
He saw her balance on the screen before she could hide it. R40.12
Didn’t comment. Just finished his transaction.
"Olivia," he said outside. "Let me—"
"No."
"Okay." He nodded. "Can I do something else then?"
"What?"
"Walk you to Shoprite. Help you carry bread. That’s free."
She laughed. Wet. "Deal."
At the till: bread R16. Milk R24. Total R40.
She had exact change.
Thabo didn’t offer to pay. He just held the bags while she tapped her card.
Walking home, he said, "You didn’t have to tell me you were broke."
"I didn’t," Olivia said. "You just saw."
"Yeah. And I didn’t use it."
"I know," she said. And for the first time, she meant it.
---
*Hit 12: The Misunderstanding*
Two weeks later. Olivia didn’t show up to the library.
No text.
Thabo waited till 5. Left.
Next day:
"Where were you?" he asked, trying to sound casual.
"My brother was sick. Hospital."
"Oh. Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Just tired."
Then Friday. Thabo posted a pic on his w******p status. Him + Naledi at a church event. Both smiling.
Olivia saw it at 11pm. Stomach dropped.
_He’s one of them. They always go back._
She didn’t come to the library Monday. Or Tuesday.
Wednesday, Thabo showed up at her class.
"Can we talk?"
"In public?"
"Please."
Outside:
"Naledi is my cousin," he said fast. "Church youth thing. I wasn’t gonna post it but my phone was on her hand."
Olivia crossed arms. "You could’ve texted."
"I did. You didn’t reply."
"I was scared."
"Of me?"
"Of this." She gestured between them. "Of it being real and then you leaving."
Thabo stepped closer. "I’m not going anywhere. But you gotta tell me when you’re scared, not disappear."
Olivia nodded. Small.
"Same time tomorrow?"
"Same time."
