I Woke Up Married
On the day she lost her identity, she married the only man who could give it back. Evelyn Carter's POV Darkness. That was the first thing I remembered. Not a dream. Not a face. Just darkness. Then came the beeping. Slow. Steady. Relentless. My eyelids felt impossibly heavy as I forced them open. A blinding white light flooded my vision, making me flinch. For several seconds, everything was blurry. White ceiling. White walls. White curtains swaying gently beside a large window. The sharp scent of antiseptic filled the air. Hospital. I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through my head. A gasp escaped my lips. The movement attracted a nurse standing near the doorway. Her eyes widened. "Miss! You're awake!" She hurried toward me before pressing a button on the wall. Within moments, several footsteps echoed down the hallway. A doctor entered first. Two nurses followed behind him. The doctor smiled warmly. "Good morning." I stared at him blankly. "How are you feeling?" My lips felt dry. "I..." The single word scraped painfully from my throat. A nurse quickly handed me a glass of water. I took a careful sip. The cool liquid soothed my throat. The doctor picked up a clipboard. "Can you tell me your name?" I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. My name. It should have been simple. Instead... There was only silence. Panic slowly spread through my chest. I searched my mind desperately. Nothing. Not a single memory. Not even my own name. "I..." Tears filled my eyes. "I don't know." The doctor's smile disappeared. He exchanged a quick glance with one of the nurses. "Do you remember where you are?" I shook my head. "No." "What year is it?" Another shake. "I don't know." My breathing became uneven. Why couldn't I remember? Who was I? Where was my family? Why was I here? The questions crashed into me all at once. My chest tightened. The heart monitor beside me began beeping faster. "Miss, please calm down." "I can't remember anything!" My voice cracked. "I don't know who I am!" The nurse gently held my hand. "Take a deep breath." I tried. Really, I did. But fear had already taken over. Then... The hospital room door opened. Everyone turned. A man walked inside. He was tall. Well over six feet. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His dark hair was neatly styled. His sharp jawline and calm blue eyes gave him an almost unreal appearance. The room fell silent. Even the doctor straightened slightly. The stranger's gaze landed on me. For the briefest moment... Something flickered in his eyes. Relief. Then it vanished. He looked at the doctor. "How is she?" His voice was deep. Controlled. The doctor cleared his throat. "She woke up a few minutes ago." The stranger nodded once. Then his eyes returned to me. I had never seen him before. At least... I didn't think I had. Yet something about him made my heart beat strangely. Not recognition. Curiosity. He stepped closer to the bed. "How do you feel?" I stared at him. "...Who are you?" Silence. The doctor looked uncomfortable. The nurses exchanged nervous glances. The stranger didn't react immediately. Instead, he looked directly into my eyes. As though searching for something. Finally, he spoke. "My name is Lucien Ashford." The name meant nothing to me. Should it have? "I'm sorry," I whispered. "I don't know you." His expression remained calm. "I know." My confusion deepened. "If we've never met..." He interrupted me. "We've met." A chill ran through me. "What?" "You just don't remember." The room suddenly felt colder. The doctor quietly motioned for the nurses to leave. Within seconds, we were alone. Only the doctor. Lucien. And me. The doctor folded his hands. "Miss... there's something you should know." His tone made my stomach twist. "What is it?" He looked toward Lucien. Almost asking permission. Lucien gave a small nod. The doctor took a slow breath. "When emergency services found you, you were wearing this." He reached into a drawer beside the bed. Then placed something gently into my hand. A wedding ring. My breath caught. It was beautiful. Simple. Elegant. It fit perfectly on my finger. I stared at it. Unable to look away. Married? No... That couldn't be right. Could it? I looked up at the doctor. "Whose ring is this?" He hesitated. Then quietly answered. "Yours." The room spun. I looked at my left hand. A pale mark circled my ring finger. As though I had worn the ring for a very long time. My pulse quickened. "No..." This couldn't be happening. I couldn't remember my own name. How could I possibly have a husband? Slowly... Almost fearfully... I turned toward Lucien. He hadn't moved. His expression remained unreadable. My voice barely rose above a whisper. "Do you know who my husband is?" For the first time since entering the room... Emotion flickered across his face. Sadness. Regret. Something deeper I couldn't understand. Then he answered. Quietly. "I'm your husband." The words hit me like a thunderclap. I stared at him. Unable to breathe. Unable to think. Every instinct told me he was telling the truth. Yet my mind was completely blank. No memories. No wedding. No love. Nothing. Just a stranger... Claiming to be my husband. And somehow... That wasn't the part that frightened me most. It was the look in his eyes. He wasn't looking at me like a man who had found his wife. He was looking at me like a man who was terrified I would remember.
