The heavy footsteps outside stopped right at the door. My heart leaped into my throat. The silver digital pen felt impossibly heavy in my shaking fingers. Alex didn't look at the door. His eyes remained locked entirely on me, a predatory, unyielding shadow waiting for his prey to yield. "Three seconds, Chloe," Alex whispered, his voice dropping into a dark, thrilling register that cut through the panic in my chest. "Sign it, or the door opens and you face them alone."
