He waited for the butler to come and announce the arrival of his private confessor, who was to accompany him to the Court session. He was the most decisive of the king, as abbot general of the most powerful monastic order in the kingdom. He had been a faithful friend of his father and had played an important part in supporting his reforms aimed at limiting the power and privileges of the aristocracy to benefit the crown. However, he was also interested in the powers of the Church, which the monk, a true man of God, wanted less worldly and much more spiritual.
