The Contract

I should have run. But I didn’t. Instead, I sat across from him in a quiet restaurant, staring at the contract placed in front of me. “I don’t understand,” I said. “Why me?” “Because you don’t look like the others.” “The others?” “Gold diggers.” I scoffed. “And you think I’m not one?” “If you were,” he said coldly, “you wouldn’t look like you want to run.” He wasn’t wrong. “What is this really about?” I asked. He leaned forward slightly. “I need a fake fiancée.” My heart stopped. “A what?” “You’ll act as my fiancée for three months,” he said. “In return, I’ll pay you fifty million naira.” My breath caught. Fifty million. That was more money than I had ever seen in my life. “Why?” I whispered. His expression hardened. “To destroy someone.” “What do you mean destroy someone?” I asked. Adrian’s jaw tightened. “My ex-fiancée,” he said. “She betrayed me. Now she’s getting married… to my business rival.” “And you want to ruin their wedding?” “I want to ruin their lives.” A chill ran down my spine. “You’re dangerous,” I said softly. He didn’t deny it. “Will you do it?” I looked at the contract again. My mother’s hospital bills flashed in my mind. The debt. The struggle. The pain. “I’ll do it.”
