Chapter 1

Here I sat in the car, driving to Drastin to visit my sister. Thank god the roads were clear and I could quickly drive my way there. This road trip was one of the worse I ever had, I had no one to talk to, I couldn't take a nap because I would then never reach Drastin. I was peacefully jamming for some songs on my playlist and one strangely reminded me of my ex. Yes, we all have that song that either waked up our inner stripper, inner child, depressed teen or heartbroken us. And this one reminded me of him. He was my first everything, the first man I ever trusted. The reason we broke up was that we both worked hard and barely had time for each other, our relationship wasn't like before anymore. So we broke up, and we are still on good terms, luckily. Oh, the good old days. I giggled as I was tapping on the wheel, moving my head around to the beat of the song. "My heart is a stereo du du du." I smiled and started to sing along to Stereo Hearts by Adam Levine and Gym Class Heroes. And that's how I continued driving to Drastin, stopping only when necessary. If the GPS was right, I should arrive in Drastin at ten in the evening. The sun went down, and my car started to beep. I needed to fill up my gas. Then I saw my favourite gas station. Not only this gas station was ten minutes away from Drastin city, but they made the most fabulous burgers on earth. Like that s**t would give you a foodgasm. I pulled over and saw some cars parking like idiots. "f***s sake, people think they own the world ey?" I rolled my eyes at the sight. I let out a deep sigh as I took my wallet and started to go towards the door of the shop. A really bad feeling washed over me as I grabbed the doorknob. I slowly opened the door, it was dark and really bad smell hit my nose, making me halt backwards. "Ew, what the f**k is this s**t. Smells like rotten meat." I gagged as I stepped inside the shop. A flashlight was laying on the ground. I grabbed it and looked around. My worse dreams have come true. Blood was splattered on the ground. "H-hello?" I called out to the empty shop. "H-help" someone called out. I started walking towards the sound and saw a policeman on the ground, holding his neck as blood ran out of his wound. "Sir, what happened?!" I asked him, trying to help him. He handed me his gun with some extra bullets and a shotgun. "Go....there and....help...please...." he groaned out, I could see his skin got paler and paler. I gulped down and started walking towards the door the policeman pointed at. Luckily, my grandfather taught me how to shoot with a shotgun or any handgun possible, since he was a military veteran. I slowly opened the door, hearing some groaning. "Hello?" I called out. That's when I saw another policeman holding someone back. But that someone looked dead. "NO, stay ba-" the officer managed to say as the creature tackled him on the ground biting a huge junk of his neck, and slowly looking up to me and standing up. "No, stay back!" I shouted at it as I pointed my gun at it. I stood there frozen at the spot, my legs shaking. I was scared, what is this s**t? It looks like a zombie, but there is no way, that s**t exists only in movies. I gulped down as I gathered up my courage and shot its head once, twice and then again and again. The zombie fell and didn't stand up. My breath got heavy from the shock. I just shot someone. I quickly turned around and left the room just to see the injured officer that also turned into a zombie. "What the f**k!" I screamed out as I started running out of the shop. I slammed the door open and fell. "f**k this!" I shouted and got back up running towards my car. I quickly turned it on and drifted out of that place. I could see how it just got filled with all these monsters just a few seconds after I left it. "What the actual f**k is this s**t. What happened here?" My voice cracked. My mind got filled with worries. Is this what Jenny was talking about, the virus that they found in the dead bodies? I hope this is some kind of sick joke, but it can't be. This is real, a zombie apocalypse is here, and now we are blended into it. I kept on driving till I reached the city, it was dark and empty, cars were crashed into each other and on fire. It has started to rain. As I kept on driving forward, the road was barricaded. Cars were laying on top of each other, some planks and nails were placed on them. "Didn't want anyone to go through hmm." I sighed and got out of the car, still holding onto the guns. I walked closer to the cars, noticing there is no way I could climb up without hurting myself. As I looked around and on one side, I saw an alley going behind a building and on the other, I saw zombies coming closer to me. You sure as hell know what I choose, the back alley. I quickly ran to it, closing the gate behind me and slowly walked towards the corner, preparing my gun just in case another zombie was planning to attack me. I walked silently as possible to the corner and jump into it, nothing. I let out a sigh of relief as I started to run towards another alley. I was not made for this, but sure as hell adrenaline was pumping, giving me enough power to stealthy runaway and shoot those things. I stood behind a corner silently, listening after any moving or sounds. If it was silent, I ran around the corner. I came back onto the main road and finally could see the Drastin Police Station. I smiled as I started running towards the gate, trying to open it. The metal gate cling, it was locked. "HEY, OPEN THE GATE ANYONE. PLEASE!" I shouted out as I shook the gate. "f**k THIS" I slammed my hand on the gate. I turned around and started walking towards another gate, one that I could open, I pushed it open slowly and quickly got inside, locking it behind me and started walking downstairs. There was a door, it wasn't used that much, but I usually sneaked inside here to see Jenny while I was on a visit. The stairs were covered in blood and everything smelled so bad, I was on the verge to throw up.  I opened the door into the station, the smell got worse. I was trying so hard to not throw up at the smell. I flashed my flashlight around, looking for any living humans or absolutely anything else than zombies. The room was filled with chairs and tables, it had to be an office. The walls were filled with blood and some chunks of I don't know what and I rather not know either. I walked down and started looking for more bullets and probably a knife I could use. I took whatever I could find, lockpicks, bullets, another handgun. This doesn't count as stealing since I'm trying to survive, right? Everything that came handy, I placed into my pockets and belt. "Oh boy, if I survive this, I'm going to quit my job and move on an island where no zombies or humans can come." I let out a low laugh.  Slowly, I made my way to the door leading into the main room, also the reception. It is a huge hall and the main place of Drastin city. The hall is used for many things, like different types of banquets, elections and so on. Simply put, it's a massive place and that makes this place so much worse. It will take me ages until I find my sister or someone who can help me find her and get out of this hell. I quickly opened the door and got inside the main hall. It was filled with blood, medication kits, some black bags filled with something I did not want to know what. "HELLO??? IS ANYBODY HERE?" I called out but no answer came. As I started feeling hopeless, I gathered up my courage and started walking up the stairs. I don't give a f**k if I get hurt, as long as I find my sister, alive or not, but hopefully alive. As I was going around, checking in every room and every hallway, there was no sign of anyone. "JENNY!!!! IS ANYBODY HERE!!!!!" I shouted out everywhere I went, hoping that someone was still alive and could help me, both surviving and helping me find my sister before it was too late.  I came to a hallway that was filled with blood, every wall was splattered with blood and the ground was filled with blood and I hope the f**k, not human meat. I flashed my flashlight into the hallway, seeing a policeman in the corner of the hallway, looking dead. "Sir? Are you ok?" I called out to the man, no answer came. I came too late. As I slowly started walking towards him, I heard something metallic clang behind the corner. Halting my steps, I slowly prepared my shotgun and aimed towards the corner. Whatever this is...I will not survive this if it attacks me. Whatever this thing was, it started snarling and jump on the police officer and started devouring it. I stood there frozen in spot, everything hurt. I wanted to scream out so badly and run away, but I couldn't, I just stood there. Slowly, I lowered my shotgun and very slowly raising my flashlight, pointing towards the monster. I felt my puke run up my throat. This wasn't any zombie, it was s skinless monster with a metal jaw and its teeth were long and sharp. I let out a small gasp. That monster turned to me and jumped off the policeman. It started coming closer and closer. I slowly started walking backwards until I hit the door. Does this thing lure humans to a corner and violently kill them there? So many questions and thoughts ran through my head as I looked down on the monster. The monster stood up, snarled and clicked with his teeth. I shut my eyes as tears started to run down my cheeks. This was my end.  BANG BANG BANG I heard a shot coming in front of me. The monster turned around and clang with his teeth before it charged towards the shooting. "RUN OUT... MEET ME IN THE MAIN HALL!"  a male voice shouted at me before he ran away with the creature. I put myself together and started running out of the door. More zombies came for every side. I kept shooting their heads until my way was clear. I ran downstairs hoping that the man who saved me, would be still alive and in one piece. I stopped next to the reception table, breathing heavily. My heartbeat was beating so fast, my hands and legs shook violently as I remembered the creature. I closed my eyes and supported myself on the table in front of me. Soon enough, I heard a gate open. Quickly looking up towards the sound, I saw a tall and handsome man locking down the door.  "Hey?! You here?" he shouted out. "Yes, Yes I'm here," I answered. The man looked at me and came closer to the table. This man was from the military, he was well built and at least twenty centimetres taller than me, earning some respect from me. He had the military fade haircut and short cut beard, his jaw was sharper than knives. His brown eyes were sternly looking, yet their gaze was soft and caring. He came closer and asked me "What happened to you and how did you get in here? Why are you even here and how did you survive this long?" his voice was deep, sending shivers down my spine. "I came to Drastin to visit my younger sister, she is, well was working here in the police station. I just arrived an hour ago." I answered him, still being amazed by him. "What's your profession, are you police or something? You know what you are doing." he let out a low chuckle. "Well believe me or not, I'm an office rat, an advocate. And the reason I can handle guns is that my grandfather taught me when I was younger. He was a military veteran." I smiled softly at him. "An advocate handling a gun, not the best combo when we think twice about it, but you are pretty good." he let out a sigh and sat down on a chair. "Em excuse me, could you please tell me who you are and explain what is happening here?" I asked him, my voice cracked on the thought of everything I saw. "Oh sorry, I'm Christopher Warren, you can call me Chris. I'm a captain in Bioterrorism Alliance and I was sent here to stop this mess. But when I arrived here, over eighty percentage was already undead and then the ten percent were infected or dead. The last ten percentage left the city a few hours ago. And I'm stuck here waiting for more orders or living humans like you to arrive. And you are?" he said coldly. Happiness sparked in me. "My name is Evelyn Kordel. So, you say that my sister can still be alive?" I asked him hopefully. "What was her business here?" he asked me, looking deep into my eyes. I could see that there was not much hope for her. "She worked here, at the station. She is a happy bubble you would have seen her if she was....ok...." My voice cracked again. "What was her name?" Chris asked me as he stood up and came closer to me, gently stroking my cheek. "Jenny...Kordel." I answered him. I looked into his eyes. His eyes were just so pretty. "I have not heard that name, but you have to believe she went out of the city when the last train left," Chris said as he let go of my cheek. "Now, since we are the probably the last humans alive here, I need you to help me." He told me. "Very well, there is not so much I can do expect to know the laws, and maybe shoot off some heads." I let out a low giggle. Chris chuckled and said. "I need to find Gamma's Corporations main building and I need a partner who can watch my back." his eyes were filled with trust and will. "Me? Watching your back as your partner? You want to die?" I let out a low laugh. "Well, you want to sit here and wait for me to come back? These monsters you saw up there, will break the door anytime, and more zombies will come for your neck. You won't survive that. It will be better if we stick together, and if the government comes for me, I can save you too and ask them to find your sister between those who were saved. How does that sound to you?" His voice was filled with triumph.  I let out a sigh and answered: "Alright, but don't expect me to do any special magical stuff, I'm no soldier."  I shrugged. "Don't worry, I will teach you the things you need to know. But first, you need to gear up, so you can carry some extra bullets or anything else that will come handy." He chuckled. "Hey, don't worry. I will protect you and get you out of here in one piece." Chris said softly and smiled at me. "I hope you do" I let out a small chuckle. "Now, let's get you ready." Chris sent a smirk towards me. I rolled my eyes and followed him.
