Chris helped me out with gearing up. "Well, I don't have any military clothing that you could use, but at least I will get you some hip pouches and some belt that can hold onto some weapons, and some protection stuff like flashbangs, smoke grenade and grenades. And trust me, we will need everything we find. God knows how long we are going to be stuck here." Chris said as his hands travelled around waist as he fixed my belt. "You know that I could put a belt on?" I asked him. "Oh my bad, just trying to be nice," Chris said as he pulled away and opened a box next to me, revealing a set of knives, guns, flashbangs, grenades and so on. "Holy." I looked at the set. "This set as owned by a good soldier, unfortunately, he got bitten and shot himself before he could turn and hurt anyone else. You get his set now and hopefully, it will bring us good luck. Now, gear up." Chris ordered and started walking out of the room. "Of course Captain." I chuckled out as he sighed. This is going to be a tough night for both of us.
I placed bullets in my hip pouch, knives into the belt and flashbangs and grenades inside my other hip pouch. I let out a sigh as I started walking out of the room. Chris was sitting on a chair in the reception, looking serious. "Is something wrong Chris?" I asked him softly. Chris looked at me, his eyes widened and he looked up and down on me. "Is something wrong? Did I put something wrong or?" I asked him, not having any clue what was happening. "Oh no, nothing is wrong with you," Chris said as he shook his head, going back to focus on the computer, scratching his beard. "We might have a problem and it doesn't look good," Chris answered, leaning back on the chair and crossing arms. I came next to him looking at the screen. It was camera surveillance from the whole building, and on these four videotapes, there were zombies and of those skinless bastards. "What were those skinless bastards anyway?" I asked Chris, feeling my stomach turn inside me. "Those guys are called metalmouths. They are blind, but they hear, makes up for that. Their teeth are made out of steel, that's why we call them metalmouths. Their real name is still to be discovered and you are going to help me out with that when we find the Gamma's main headquarters. We will arrest the boss and everyone else who has a connection to this mess." Chris's voice was deep and serious. "You...Have seen this before, haven't you?" I asked him softly as I sat down next to him. "This is my work, so yea, but I have seen worse than this," Chris answered me, I could hear his voice shake, but he did anything he could to cover it up. "How long have you been in the military and why?" I asked once more. He let out a chuckle. "Well, I've been in the military for ten years now, and yes that means I'm twenty-eight years old. When I was nine years old, my parents got murdered in a terrorist attack in Washington D.C. Ever since then, it has been me and my younger sister. Well, it was us two until I got drafted into the military and we went separated ways." Chris answered me and looked at me. "What about you, what's your story?" Chris turned his chair, fully facing me.
"Well, my father was a police officer here. When I was ten years old, we decided to travel to Paris and it just happened so fast I don't quite remember what happened. I later woke up in a hospital with my sister next to me, saying that there was a terrorist attack right where we were and our parents got killed that day. So just like you, I guess, I started to focus more on school and become an advocate and my sister became a police officer working against terrorist. And I have never been more proud of her. But now, I just don't know if she is out of this hell hole or if she is stuck somewhere injured." I answered as I looked down, feeling sadness rush over me. "You have a close relationship with her huh," Chris said as he came closer to me. "We will find her ok? I promise you, you and her will get out of this alive and in one piece." Chris said, gently placing his hand on my cheek, stroking it with his thumb. "Now, try to take a short nap and regain your powers. I will stay here with you so you don't have to worry about anything." Chris said as he pulled away from my cheek. I felt a small pain in my chest. What is wrong with me? Why do I feel like this? "Will you be fine?" I asked him, still not moving away, I was tired I'm not denying it, but I can't let him do everything alone. "Yes, I will be fine don't worry about it. Now go and take a nap. The sooner you fall asleep, the sooner we can go and look for your sister." Chris said with a warm smile. "Alright then," I answered in defeat. "Use this bed here, at least you will be closer to me." Chris pointed down at the bed behind me. Well, it wasn't a bed, more like a mattress with a small pillow and a blanket. "Thank you, Chris," I said, sweetly smiling to him as I tucked myself in and let out a sigh. "Sleep well, Evelyn." I heard Chris's voice right before a deep slumber took me in.
I started waking up. Slowly. "C-Chris?" I called out, but no answer came. I stretched my back before I stood up and looked around. "Evelyn! You are awake." Chris came through the main door, looking happily at me. "I have good news for you, your sister is alive and we are leaving this hell," He said as he jogged towards me. "You did?!" I asked him, my hopes high up. "Yes my love, I did," Chris said as he placed his hand on my cheek, looking deep into my eyes. I got lost in his beautiful brown eyes. As we started coming closer and closer to each other, I heard skin being torn apart. I opened my eyes and saw Chris standing there with a hand straight through his chest. "NOOOOO" I screamed out as I quickly sat up, looking around. "Evelyn hey, hey, shh, calm down" Chris sat next to me, placing his hands on my cheeks, making me look at him. I was breathing hard and fast, it felt like my chest was about to blow up. I looked into Chris's eyes and felt myself starting to calm down. When I felt my tears prick my eyes, I jumped into his chest and started crying. Chris let out a sigh and wrapped his arms around me, gently rubbing it. "Everything will be ok Evie, Shhh." Chris started talking to me. I got lost in his voice. Feeling him close to me, made me feel safe. "What did you dream off?" His voice brought me back to reality. "Oh, I'm so sorry," I said, sniffing. "It was just a nightmare about this hell," I told him. There is no way I will tell him about what I dreamt about, and definitely about being attracted to him. "I got some food from the fridge, it's still, hopefully, good. I hope you don't have any allergies." Chris said to me as he slowly pulled away, starting to stroke my cheek. "No, I don't have any allergies." I let out a small giggle at his remark. "Wait here, I'm going to bring it to you," Chris said as he smiled to me. "Oh come on. It was just a bad dream, it doesn't mean I lost the ability to move." I let out a laugh. "Hey, Let me be, I'm trying to act like a gentleman." he mocked me and left to the fridge, bringing back two baguettes.
"Here, eat this." Chris handed me a baguette and sat down next to me supporting himself on the table. We ate the baguettes in silence. Suddenly we heard a door open up and someone call out "HEY! IS ANYBODY HERE?!" three male voices shouted out. Chris quickly jumped up and looked towards the people. "Well, well, well, if it isn't Leon, Mike and Lucas..." Chris said as he crossed his arms. Mike? I asked myself before standing up and checking who it was. My eyes darted from each guy until I saw him. "Mike...." I said in shock. "Evelyn? Is that you?" Mike looked at me with the same shock. "Wait you know each other?" Chris asked, looking between me and Mike. "Yea we do. Where is Jenny?" I answered Chris's question before looking sternly at Mike. "Look, Evelyn, we got separated when we got chased by god knows what. Since then I have never seen her." Mike's eyes fell to the ground as he let out a sob. Something told me that there was something off, Mike was lying. I shook off the feeling, come on Evelyn, Mike is Jenny's boyfriend, he would never let her go just like that, but my gut feeling kept saying the different. "But ey Chris...What have you been doing with a beautiful young lady all alone?" another guy smirked towards Chris, then started checking me out. I rolled my eyes and sat on the table behind me, crossing my arms. "Alright Lucas, calm the f**k down. I'm not you who will do anything to fuck." Chris snarled towards Lucas who took a step back. "I'm trying to save as many survivors as I can, she isn't hurt so she will help me, at least. Now, did you find anyone?" Chris said emotionless. "Unfortunately no. The whole city is dead. Correction undead." Mike said, his voice is cold as stone. "There must be some survivors in this city. There has to be." Chris let out a deep sigh. I could see he was exhausted and drained. And I felt it too, there can be hundreds of people alive, hoping that we would find them and the only god knows how many times they walked past by them.
"Evelyn?" Chris's voice snapped me back to reality. "Y-Yes?" I asked Chris back. "You alright?" he asked me back. "Oh yea, just lost in thoughts" I smiled back to him. "Alright. We all are going out and see if anyone is still alive. We part in two teams, Lucas, Mike and Evelyn, you go to the left side of the city. Leon and I will go right. Keep the radios up so we stay in contact in any case of emergency. Never go alone anywhere." Chris said in a serious tone. Everyone nodded and took out their guns. "Now let's get going," Chris ordered. We all walked outside and went separated ways.
The city was empty and silent. Making me even more scared and unsure of what might happen. "Evelyn..." I heard Mike say. "Yes, Mike?" I looked up to him. "You are too scared, we will be fine," Mike smiled towards me. I nodded and smiled softly at him as he placed his palm on my shoulder, gently shaking it, making me giggle and lighten up my mood a bit. As I started feeling better, we heard groaning behind us. Mike and Lucas turned around, while I was stuck looking at what was in front of me. "Evelyn! Help us shoot these guys." I heard Lucas talk to me, but this thing was far worse than those zombies. "Em. G-Guys, I don't think zombies are the worse thing here we need to worry about." I said as I grabbed Mike by his elbow. He turned around and froze in the spot. "Oh, shit...." Mike's voice dropped low. Whatever that was. It was a huge human-like figure standing and looking at us. His face was deformed. The creature was over two meters tall with huge muscles and it started stomping towards us. "RUN!!!" Mike shouted out as he grabbed my arm and started running away. I could still hear it stomp behind us, but I couldn't see Leon anywhere. "We left Lucas behind!!" I shouted at Mike, still running behind him. "He will be fine! He surely knows what he is doing!" Mike answered me. We ran between houses, in the back alleys, but this monster kept chasing us no matter where we went. Mike stopped in an alley, shoving me inside a corner behind the garbage tank. He quickly covered my mouth and pushed himself close to me. We both were breathing heavily, leaning into each other.
We could hear the creature stomp its way closer to us. In fear, I shut my eyes closed and hugged Mike tightly. I felt his arms wrap around me too. Suddenly the creature picked up the garbage tank and threw it away. "NOO!" I screamed out. Mike quickly stood and ran away. "WAIT!" I shouted back, quickly standing up and trying to run but the creature caught me. "No. Please" I let out a scream as it squeezed me in its arms. "CHRIS!" I screamed out in pain, hoping Chris would come and save me. The creature's grip got tighter and tighter on my waist, making me slowly lose consciousness because of the pain. In his left hand, I saw Lucas's torso. He got ripped apart by this creature while we ran away like some cowards. "C-Chris...." I let out as I heard someone shoot the creature and I felt to the ground. "Evie! Talk to me! Come on answer me" I heard a voice talk to me shaking me gently, but the pain was too strong for me to do anything. "C-Chris..." I let out a low whisper. "Shh... I got you now." The same voice answered. I felt myself get picked up and quickly carried away as I lost consciousness.
