đ CHAPTER ONE: I DIED⊠AND HE WAS SMILING
The night I turned eighteen⊠I died.
Not in the quiet, peaceful way people talk about in stories.
Not with someone holding my hand or whispering goodbye.
No.
Mine was loud. Cold. Terrifying.
And the worst part?
The person who came to kill me⊠was someone I trusted.
âLuna, stop!â
His voice cut through the storm like lightning.
For a secondâjust a secondâmy body almost obeyed. My legs nearly gave in, slowing, wanting to turn back. That voice used to mean safety. It used to mean I was okay.
But tonight⊠it sounded like death.
I ran faster.
Rain slammed against my skin, soaking my dress, turning it heavy and useless against my body. My bare feet slipped on the muddy ground, stones cutting into my skin, but I didnât stop.
I couldnât stop.
If I stopped, I knew exactly what would happen.
âYOU CANâT RUN FROM THIS, LUNA!â
His voice was closer now.
Too close.
My chest tightened, each breath burning as I pushed forward through the dark forest. The wind howled through the trees, branches scratching against my arms as if even the forest was trying to hold me back.
Or warn me.
âYou promisedâŠâ My voice broke as I whispered it, even though I knew he could hear me. âYou said you would never hurt meâŠâ
Silence.
Just the sound of rain.
And thenâ
A low, cold laugh.
âThat was before I knew what you are.â
My steps faltered.
No.
No, no, no.
I shook my head as I kept running, but something inside me cracked. That sentenceâit didnât just scare me. It hurt.
âWhat I am?â I shouted, my voice trembling. âWhat does that even mean?!â
âStop running,â he said, quieter now.
Closer.
Too close.
My foot caught on a root hidden beneath the mud.
And just like thatâ
I fell.
Hard.
Pain shot through my knees and hands as I hit the ground, the air knocked out of my lungs. For a second, I couldnât move. Couldnât breathe.
This is it.
Slowly⊠I turned.
He stood a few feet away, rain dripping from his dark hair, his expression unreadable.
The same face I knew.
The same eyes I used to trust.
But something inside them had changed.
There was no warmth left.
No hesitation.
Just⊠emptiness.
âGet up,â he said calmly.
Like this was nothing.
Like I was nothing.
I pushed myself up slightly, my hands trembling. âTell me what you mean,â I whispered. âWhat am I?â
He stared at me for a long moment.
And thenâ
âYouâre a mistake.â
The words hit harder than the fall.
A mistake.
Not a person.
Not someone worth saving.
Just something that shouldnât exist.
I let out a shaky laugh, even though my chest felt like it was collapsing. âThatâs not an answer.â
âItâs the only one you need,â he replied.
âThen why didnât you kill me before?â I asked, my voice sharper now, anger breaking through the fear. âIf Iâm such a mistake, why wait until now?â
He paused.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
Something flickered in his eyes.
Hesitation.
But it disappeared just as quickly.
âBecause tonight,â he said, stepping closer, âyour power awakens.â
My stomach dropped.
âPower?â I repeated. âI donât have any power.â
âYou will,â he said quietly.
The air shifted.
It wasnât just the storm anymore.
Something else was there.
Something⊠wrong.
âAnd when it does,â he continued, his voice almost gentle now, âyou wonât be able to control it.â
My heart started racing again, but this time it wasnât just fear.
It was confusion.
âWhat are you talking about?â I said. âIâm justââ
âYouâre not âjustâ anything, Luna.â
The way he said my nameâŠ
It didnât sound like he knew me anymore.
âYouâll destroy everything,â he said.
The words hung in the air between us.
Heavy.
Impossible.
âI donât believe you,â I whispered.
But even as I said it⊠something deep inside me stirred.
Something I didnât understand.
Something that scared me more than he did.
He took another step closer.
âAnd thatâs why you canât live.â
My breath caught.
This was real.
This wasnât a threat anymore.
It was a decision.
He raised his hand.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
And for the first timeâ
I felt it.
Death.
Not as an idea.
Not as a fear.
But as something real.
Something coming straight for me.
âIâm sorry,â he said.
But he didnât sound sorry.
The moment stretched.
The rain slowed.
The world held its breath.
And thenâ
The sky broke open.
A blinding silver light tore through the darkness, crashing down between us with a force that sent him stumbling back.
The ground shook violently beneath me.
The air exploded.
And something inside meâ
Snapped.
Pain hit me all at once.
Sharp. Burning. Endless.
I screamed.
My body lifted off the ground, suspended in the air as the light wrapped around me like fire. It felt like something was tearing me apart and putting me back together at the same time.
I couldnât breathe.
I couldnât think.
All I could feel was power.
Too much power.
And thenâ
I heard it.
A voice.
Not his.
Not mine.
âLunaâŠâ
It echoed inside me, deep and ancient.
âYou are not the mistake.â
The pain intensified.
The light grew brighter.
âYou are the beginning.â
Everything went silent.
When I opened my eyes againâŠ
I wasnât lying on the ground anymore.
The rain had stopped.
The forest felt⊠different.
Still.
Watching.
He was still there.
But he wasnât alone anymore
Another man stood behind him.
Tall. Calm. Dangerous.
My heart skipped.
Not in fear.
In recognition.
I didnât understand it.
But something inside me did.
âWhoâŠâ My voice shook as I spoke. âWho are you?â
He stepped forward slowly, his eyes never leaving mine.
Dark.
Intense.
Like he had been searching for me.
âIâm the one who was sent to kill you,â he said.
My chest tightened.
Of course.
Another one.
But thenâ
He took another step closer.
And his voice dropped.
ââŠbut now Iâm the only one who can keep you alive.â
Everything inside me froze.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Not him.
Not the power.
Not the way my heart reacted to someone who should have been my enemy.
I swallowed hard, my mind spinning.
Trust him?
Run?
Fight?
I didnât know what was worse.
StayingâŠ
Or surviving.
If you were Luna⊠would you trust him or run? đ
