đź‘‘ A CROWN MADE OF SCARS 1
Crown Made of Scars
Episode 1: The Queen They Broke
The night I was crowned was the same night they tried to kill me.
Rain poured over the palace like the heavens themselves were mourning, turning the marble steps into silver mirrors beneath the storm. Hundreds of candles burned along the grand hall, their flames trembling whenever thunder rolled across the mountains, while nobles dressed in black and gold watched me walk toward the throne with expressions that held everything except welcome.
I could feel their eyes on my scars.
They were impossible to hide.
One ran from the corner of my left eyebrow down toward my cheek, another disappeared beneath the collar of my black gown, and several thinner marks crossed my wrists like pale memories carved into my skin.
They had once called them shame.
Tonight, they were my crown.
I walked slowly, refusing to lower my head.
At the end of the hall stood the throne of the Kingdom of Valeria, carved from dark stone and surrounded by golden wolves whose mouths were frozen in snarls. Beside it stood King Adrian Blackthorne, the man who had once promised to love me until death.
He had kept half of that promise.
He had loved me until he decided I was no longer useful.
Then he had left me to die.
Three years ago, I had entered this palace as a bride.
Tonight, I returned as the woman who would take his kingdom from him.
The whispers followed me.
“She survived?”
“I thought she was dead.”
“She looks different.”
“She looks dangerous.”
I heard every word.
I smiled anyway.
Because they were right.
I was dangerous now.
The royal priest raised the crown above my head.
“Princess Elena Vale,” he announced, his voice echoing through the enormous hall, “by blood, by right, and by decree of the late king, you are hereby recognized as the rightful Queen of Valeria.”
A murmur swept through the crowd.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
He had expected me to remain buried.
He had never expected me to return.
The crown descended toward my head.
Then—
A sharp whistle cut through the hall.
My body reacted before my mind could.
I dropped.
An arrow flew over my head and shattered against the throne behind me.
The hall erupted into screams.
Guards rushed forward.
Nobles scattered.
Adrian reached for his sword.
But I was already moving.
I grabbed the dagger hidden against my thigh and turned toward the balcony.
A dark figure stood there.
For one heartbeat, our eyes met.
Then he disappeared into the storm.
“Lock the palace!” Adrian shouted.
But I barely heard him.
Because I knew that man.
Or at least, I knew his eyes.
Cold.
Silver.
Familiar.
My breath caught.
Impossible.
He had died three years ago.
The one person who had known the truth about what happened to me.
The one man who had promised that if the palace ever tried to destroy me, he would burn it to the ground.
I whispered his name.
“Lucien.”
Adrian turned sharply.
“What did you say?”
I looked at him.
For the first time that night, my smile disappeared.
“Nothing.”
He stepped closer.
“You know who fired that arrow.”
“No.”
“You're lying.”
I laughed softly.
“After everything you did to me, Your Majesty, you still think you can tell when I'm lying?”
His expression darkened.
Before he could answer, the palace doors slammed open.
A soldier stumbled inside.
Blood covered his uniform.
“My king…”
Adrian turned.
“What happened?”
The soldier collapsed onto the marble floor.
“They're here.”
Adrian's face went pale.
“Who?”
The soldier looked toward me.
“The Night Wolves.”
Silence.
Every noble in the hall froze.
The Night Wolves were not ordinary soldiers.
They were assassins.
Mercenaries.
Killers who served no kingdom.
And for three years, everyone had believed their leader was dead.
Lucien Blackthorn.
The king's older brother.
The man whose death had supposedly allowed Adrian to inherit the throne.
My husband.
My enemy.
My first love.
The man who had disappeared the night I was betrayed.
The hall suddenly filled with the sound of steel being drawn.
Then the chandeliers went out.
Darkness swallowed the palace.
Someone screamed.
I heard footsteps behind me.
Fast.
Close.
A hand wrapped around my waist.
I reached for my dagger, but a familiar voice whispered against my ear.
“Don't.”
My entire body went still.
That voice.
That impossible voice.
Deep.
Calm.
Dangerously familiar.
I slowly turned my head.
Silver eyes stared back at me from the darkness.
Lucien.
Alive.
Scarred.
And smiling.
“You came back for the crown,” he whispered.
His fingers tightened around my waist.
“But you forgot something, Elena.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“What?”
He leaned closer.
“You were never meant to wear the crown.”
A pause.
“You were meant to rule beside me.”
The lights suddenly returned.
Lucien was gone.
But something cold pressed against my palm.
I looked down.
A black rose lay in my hand.
Beneath it was a small piece of parchment.
Three words had been written across it in blood.
Trust no one.
I looked toward Adrian.
Then toward the nobles.
And finally toward the throne.
For the first time, I understood.
My coronation had not been a celebration.
It had been a declaration of war.
And someone inside this palace had already chosen a side.
Unfortunately for them—
So had I.
