CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN IN BLACK
Rain poured over Neo-Vesper City like silver needles stabbing the streets below. The city never truly slept. It breathed. Neon lights flickered across towering skyscrapers, holographic advertisements glowed through the storm, and armored vehicles crawled through midnight traffic beneath the elevated highways. Helicopters circled above the skyline like metal vultures hunting prey. And somewhere inside the tallest building in the city— Someone was about to steal a secret powerful enough to start a war. The Astra Dominion Tower stood above every other structure, its glass walls reflecting lightning across the clouds. Inside, the world’s most powerful diplomats, billionaires, military leaders, and intelligence officials gathered for the annual Sovereign Unity Gala. Champagne sparkled. Diamonds glittered. Lies filled the room. A violin orchestra played softly beneath crystal chandeliers while waiters moved elegantly through the crowd. No one noticed the woman in black standing near the balcony. That was exactly how she preferred it. Vaelora Vex rested one gloved hand against the champagne glass she had no intention of drinking. Her black satin gown shimmered beneath the lights, elegant enough to blend among elites, deadly enough to hide the weapons strapped beneath it. A diamond earring concealed a micro-transmitter. A silver ring held lock-breaking nanowires. And the thin blade hidden beneath her thigh could slit a throat in less than two seconds. Her dark hair was pinned neatly into a low knot, though several strands framed her sharp features. Calm gray eyes scanned the ballroom carefully, calculating exits, cameras, guards, and threats with frightening precision. Then her earpiece crackled. “Thirty seconds, Ghost Orchid.” Vaelora’s expression never changed. “I know the timing.” The voice on the other end belonged to Nysera Quinn. “Relax,” Nysera murmured. “You sound tense.” “People who relax die early.” Nysera laughed softly before the transmission cut. Vaelora turned her attention toward the center of the ballroom where Minister Lucien Varek entertained several foreign officials beside a massive digital art display. The minister smiled too much. Sweated too much. And kept touching the inside pocket of his white tuxedo jacket. That pocket contained the encrypted quantum drive. Project Helix. The reason Vaelora was there. Thunder growled outside. The ballroom lights dimmed slightly as the orchestra transitioned into a slower melody. Perfect. Vaelora moved through the crowd gracefully, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. She passed senators, celebrities, military generals, and undercover agents pretending to be guests. Most dangerous people never looked dangerous. She reached the minister just as a server walked by carrying champagne. Vaelora deliberately brushed against the tray. Glasses shattered. Champagne spilled across Lucien Varek’s jacket. “Oh my God,” Vaelora gasped smoothly, playing embarrassment flawlessly. “I’m so sorry.” The minister cursed under his breath. “Watch where you’re going!” Several guests turned toward the commotion. Exactly seven seconds of distraction. Enough. Vaelora’s fingers slipped into his jacket pocket with impossible precision. The quantum drive vanished into her palm. The minister noticed nothing. “Allow me to help,” Vaelora said sweetly, handing him a napkin. Then she walked away calmly. No panic. No rushing. That was rule one of survival. Never run unless someone is already shooting. She crossed the ballroom toward the western hallway leading to the private elevator shaft. Hidden cameras tracked movement overhead, but Vaelora already looped the security feed twelve minutes earlier. The elevator doors opened instantly after she inserted a stolen access card. The moment the doors closed— Her expression hardened. She pressed the communicator in her ear. “I have the drive.” Nysera exhaled in relief. “That was fast.” “Too fast.” Silence. Vaelora’s instincts sharpened immediately. Something felt wrong. Very wrong. The elevator suddenly stopped between floors. The lights flickered red. Then a voice echoed through the speakers. “Good evening, Ghost Orchid.” Male. Cold. Unfamiliar. Vaelora slowly reached beneath her dress and pulled out the hidden blade. “Who is this?” “You stole something that doesn’t belong to you.” The elevator locks engaged with a heavy metallic CLANK. Vaelora’s pulse remained steady. “Amateurs always monologue before they fail.” The ceiling exploded inward. Armed soldiers dropped into the elevator firing suppressed rifles. Vaelora moved instantly. Gunfire tore through the walls. She slammed her blade into the first attacker’s throat before twisting his rifle away. Another soldier lunged forward— CRACK. Vaelora broke his arm backward and fired two bullets directly into his chest. The elevator descended violently. Warning alarms screamed. A third operative tackled her against the wall. Vaelora smashed her elbow into his jaw, then drove a blade beneath his chin. Blood sprayed across the mirror walls. More footsteps above. Too many. The elevator cables suddenly snapped. The entire lift dropped. Fast. Vaelora grabbed the emergency hatch overhead seconds before the elevator crashed downward into darkness. The explosion below shook the shaft violently. Heat burst upward. She climbed rapidly through smoke and sparks while alarms echoed throughout the tower. “Vaelora!” Nysera shouted through comms. “What happened?!” “I’ve been compromised.” “What?! How?” “I don’t know yet.” Gunfire erupted above her. Vaelora flattened herself against the ladder as bullets ripped through metal inches from her face. Someone had known she was coming. Someone inside the agency had betrayed her. She climbed faster. A security door burst open overhead and four tactical agents rushed into the shaft. Vaelora leapt sideways onto a maintenance beam just as bullets shredded the ladder. One wrong movement meant a fifty-floor fall. The agents searched below. “She’s trapped!” one shouted. Vaelora silently pulled a smoke capsule from her belt. Three. Two. One. The capsule detonated. Smoke flooded the shaft instantly. Before the agents could react, Vaelora moved through the darkness like a phantom. A blade flashed. One body fell. Then another. Gunshots exploded blindly through the smoke. Vaelora kicked one operative over the railing. His scream disappeared into the darkness below. The final soldier grabbed her wrist. “You’re dead!” he snarled. Vaelora stared into his terrified eyes. “No,” she whispered coldly. “You are.” She drove his own knife into his chest. The body collapsed. Suddenly— BOOM. The entire tower shook violently. An explosion erupted several floors below. Emergency lights flashed crimson. People screamed throughout the building. Vaelora cursed softly. This mission had turned into a setup. And setups only happened when powerful people wanted someone erased permanently. She finally reached the rooftop access door and shoved it open. Rain slammed into her instantly. Helicopter blades thundered overhead. Spotlights scanned across the rooftop. “They found me fast,” she muttered. Nysera sounded panicked now. “Extraction is gone! You need another route!” Vaelora looked over the edge of the skyscraper. Fifty stories down. Traffic below looked microscopic. Another helicopter appeared from the storm clouds. Snipers leaned from the doors. A red laser sight landed on her chest. Then another. Then six more. Vaelora stepped backward slowly. Trapped. No exits. No allies. Only rain, bullets, and empty sky behind her. The lead sniper’s voice echoed through a megaphone. “Surrender immediately!” Vaelora smiled faintly. Then she jumped. Nysera screamed through the comms. The snipers rushed forward as Vaelora plummeted through the storm— —and vanished into the darkness below. --- Miles away, inside a hidden surveillance room illuminated by blue monitor screens, a man watched the rooftop footage repeatedly in silence. Kaedrin Vale leaned forward slowly. Tall. Sharp-featured. Dangerously calm. The shadows across his face made him look almost inhuman. The footage paused on a single frame. The woman turning slightly before jumping. Kaedrin stared at her face. Then at the black orchid tattoo behind her ear. His expression darkened. Impossible. Because that woman— Was supposed to be dead.
