RIVER We stood there, locked in that stare for what felt like forever, though I knew it couldn’t have been more than a few seconds. My legs screamed at me to move, and my brain begged me to run, but I couldn’t move because not until my lungs burned did I finally force myself to tear my eyes from hers and head for the front of the house. Every step felt heavier than the last, and exhaustion sank into me, dragging me down before the confrontation began.
