I was still walking on air when I got home from visiting River, my heart still carrying the glow of the evening. I heard Mrs. Wilson’s voice drift from the kitchen.
“River? Is that you?”
“Yes, it’s me,” I called back, forcing my voice to sound casual and detoured straight toward the kitchen. I had told her I needed to step out for something and promised I’d be back soon.
