A faint knock on the door pulled me out of sleep, and just then, the hinges creaked. “Are you asleep?” Mrs. Lane’s soft voice floated into the room, and I sluggishly raised my head.
“I was,” I mumbled, stretching my arms over my head while yawning, “but I’m awake now.”
Sitting up, my eyes flickered to the clock on the wall to see that it was 6:30 p.m. Which meant I had been out for four hours. Right then the smell hit me… rich warm chocolate, and my stomach gave an eager twist.
Mrs. Lane stepped in, holding a covered plate and a glass of milk on a tray.
Her face lit up with a smile. “I made your FAVORITES." I returned her smile, my heart skipping a beat as she came to sit beside me on the bed even though I knew she meant River’s favorite, not mine.
