Trouble and confusion

1315 Words
The crowd of lycans who came to watch Skylar's public execution felt duped when they saw that nothing was happening. Little by little, the crowd invaded the arena. Asher was in the center of the dais and his safety was in jeopardy. The guard reacted quickly and surrounded the prince, which drew more people to him. A madness mixed with panic had invaded the public present. Some were being trampled in the bleachers. Those who were present in the arena rushed towards the prince ready to fight. The soldiers of the guard closed their ranks to face them. "Above all, don't raise your hand on anyone." Asher yelled, his voice muffled by the shouts of the approaching crowd. "That's easier said than done my prince." shouted Leif, the leader of the guard, before turning to face him, "In formation," he shouted to his men, who transformed. The lycans in the crowd did the same as they closed in. The confrontation was imminent. And suddenly: "People of Darkfire City," thundered a booming, startling voice that pierced the air and stopped the furious runners in their tracks, as they came close to colliding with the prince's protectors. It was Aric himself, the Alpha, the Darkfire pack's most feared lycan. "Listen to your king," he continued. The lycans detransformed and gradually resumed their human form. "Are werewolf vermin worth our tearing apart? We are lycans and our pride forbids us to reduce ourselves to such a futile confrontation. Look at the disaster caused around you and ask yourself if it is worthy of us . Now the show is over. Go home and resume your lives." These words from the Lycan King completely calmed the crowd and everyone realized the extent of the desolation, between pain and tears. "Deploy your soldiers." resumed the Lycan King. "Create a safe corridor to evacuate the arena. Treat the injured and give them first aid before help arrives." Under the authoritative and protective gaze of the Lycan king, the soldiers deployed and carried out his orders. Calm was gradually returning. Nothing would have relieved Asher more than knowing that Skylar had escaped. But first he had to confirm the information, even if for the time being it was the only explanation for his absence. "If she really escaped, how did she get there?" he wondered. During the day, the Lycan King summoned his betas and a few nobles to the throne room to find out what had happened and why he hadn't been promptly informed of the mutiny and escape. Asher was also present, standing on the king's right. The king was seated in his huge royal chair and his stern expression swept the silent room. Grendel was in the center and the Lycan King broke the silence. "Grendel, you know how repulsive werewolves are to me, but with all the respect I have for you, I allowed you to do the execution of a werewolf that should have been done in a dungeon, a show where she was the star. And all this why? in the name of the honor of the lycans." The king fell silent and breathed, then raised his head and continued in a more authoritative tone. "But today, I'm sorry I let you do it because you were irresponsible. You didn't tell me about the werewolf's escape, and you still went ahead with the execution and let countless people gather in the arena and, as a result, you have put the safety of the prince, the lives of many civilians and those of our soldiers at stake. We have dozens of wounded on hand and people in total misunderstanding." The king fell silent again, then resumed in a more angry tone: "Grendel, I want to know, I want to understand what went through your mind. How could you have come to this? Whatever happens, someone will have to pay for what happened. So what do you have to say in your defense?' Grendel dropped to one knee and put his hand to his heart, his head bowed and visibly ashamed, but determined to correct his mistake. “My King, in all these years that I have served you, I have never failed in my duty and my main concern has always been the good and stability of the pack. Concerning the escape of this vermin werewolf, I do not ask for your clemency and I hold myself solely responsible for the repercussions of my choice. I therefore expect from you the sentence that I deserve." Then Grendel looked up before continuing. "But I also want to point out that these events have brought to light the presence of a traitor within our pack, in this case the one who helped this wolf to escape. At this very moment, this traitor is hiding between our walls and we must get our hands on him to understand his motives and capture his possible accomplices." "Grendel is right." "The werewolf got help. It's a scandal." could be heard in the audience. The Lycan King raised his hand to silence the audience and spoke again. "We wouldn't have come to this if your propaganda hadn't drawn so many people into the arena or if you had had the execution canceled. But traitors helping the werewolf escape is an even more serious crime that requires our full attention. Grendel, I will not punish you. Instead, I entrust you with the mission of finding this wolf and the traitors who helped her escape. They will be the alone to be held responsible for today's chaos." Grendel lowered his head again. "My king, your mania for me only increases my loyalty. My men are already on the trail of these traitors and I won't rest until we get them." he stated firmly. A new security protocol was implemented around Darkside City. The manhunt to find Skylar was stepped up and an internal investigation was opened to find out who had helped her from the inside. Ginger, who had watched the scene from the bleachers, fumed with rage that Skylar was probably still alive somewhere, while Asher was already on cloud nine, though he too was curious to know who had helped Skylar. In the evenings, as he strolled through the palace grounds, staring intently at a small flower bed, his mind concocted an array of theories about Skylar's escape. Vixel approached him and pulled him to a secluded corner. "Asher, I'm going to tell you something. But don't look surprised if someone is watching us." Asher turned to face him, eyes filled with curiosity, and huffed, "Vixel, What is this about?" "It was me. I helped Skylar escape." "How did you help her escape? Why did you do that?" Asher's voice grew higher, his eyes searching Vixel's face for answers. "To save your life," Vixel replied, trying to sound as serious as possible. "You were supposed to execute her, but knowing you, I knew you were going to do something stupid to save her." Asher was surprised by Vixel's confession and bombarded him with countless questions. "How did you do it? And why didn't you tell me before? "I did not want to involve you if things went wrong. I knew you would try to stop me or help me." "And where is Skylar right now?" Asher's voice cracked at the mention of her name. "It's complicated," Vixel sighed, avoiding Asher's questioning gaze. "I will tell you everything, but not here. We need to go somewhere private." Asher looked at him, eyes full of determination. "Let's finish this discussion in my room's room," he suggested. “We can talk in peace there. I can't wait to see her again.” As they made their way to his chambers, Asher couldn't help but wonder what else Vixel was hiding from him. Asher and Vixel were able to talk calmly and Vixel explained everything to him.
