Andrea froze and squeezed her eyes shut. The sound of the door’s hinges squeaking in the silent house was like thunder in her ears. Her heart suddenly jumped, making her breathless.
But after a handful of seconds of just listening and not moving a muscle, she realized Kristy hadn’t woken up. Slowly, Andrea opened one eye and peeked at her sister, who slept under the covers on the bed. The overhead lights were off, making it difficult to see Kristy clearly, but she thought she heard her sister’s even breaths continue as normal. Good.
Feeling a little at ease, Andrea opened both eyes. She waited for another heartbeat, and then she squeezed her body through the narrow opening of the door she had made. Once she was out, she carefully pulled the door until only a sliver of space remained.
