“Where is she?” I asked panic-stricken as I stared at the well-laid empty bed in front of me.
“She stepped out for fresh air,” the nurse answered with a smile and worry on her face as I almost collapsed.
“Oh, thank you.” I managed to say before crouching down to collate my emotions as my soul almost went out of my body a few seconds ago as I thought of the worst.
After a few minutes of collating my thoughts and emotions, I stood up to go bring her back to her bed.
As I turned to go, a middle-aged nurse wheeled her in.
“Grandma Joyce!” I shouted with excitement, almost jumping on her but I caught myself in time and just crouched and hugged her tight as if fearing that she might slip away when I was not watching.
The nurse beamed with joy while watching us with tender eyes.
“What is the fuss all about?” Grandma Joyce asked affectionately.
Stroking my hair and patting my back tenderly.
“I am not going anywhere,” she said jokingly.
“I miss you so much,” I replied with tears threatening to fall.
“Let’s put her on the bed first so she can be properly relaxed,” the middle-aged nurse who brought her in said with a broad smile plastered on her face.
“Oh, thank you” I stood up and helped move her to bed.
“ I am not that weak, I can at least do this much on my own,” Grandma Joyce protested.
We all laughed and helped her all the same.

My world turned bleak when Grandma Joyce was diagnosed 2 years ago.
While working at home she suddenly collapsed and was rushed to the hospital by the maid.
I received the call that brought my world crashing down the second time, that Grandma Joyce had collapsed and was now at the hospital while waiting for my turn to be interviewed at J & E Empire.
Without waiting for my turn I rushed out with so much pain and panic to the hospital that I knocked down an innocent man in the lobby.
“I am so sorry, I didn't see you there,” I said with my voice shaking while trying to dust myself.
“It's no problem, are you okay?” he asked in a husky magnetic tone.
“Yes, I am thank you, and you?” I was getting impatient at this point.
“That's great, nice to meet you. My name is E….,” stretching forth his hands.
I booted off before he could finish his sentence as I was not in the best frame of mind. I just needed to get to Grandma Joyce.
I hailed a taxi at the entrance of the company.
“Please take me to Excel Urgent Care,” I said to the driver hurriedly.
“Alright,” he answered as he sped off.
I wish I could be the one behind the steering wheel so I can go at the fastest speed and get to the hospital.
“Sir, can you please go faster”
“This is as fast as I am allowed to go,” he responded in an indifferent tone.
On getting to the hospital after paying the driver, I bolted out of the vehicle.
“Where can I go to see Joyce Edna?” I asked the receptionist.
She gave me directions to her ward with a smile.
On getting there I could see her perfectly aged face from the outside through the glass. Her eyes closed and a tiny strand of her grey hair cascaded down her face as she lay there while the doctor was attending to her.
“Are you her guardian?” the doctor inquired of me when he stepped out.
“Yes,” I replied anxiously with a knot in the pit of my stomach.
“She is stabilized now, when she wakes up we will need to do more tests for a perfect diagnosis,” he said in a professional and collected manner.
“Ohhh okay, thank you, doctor,” I replied while looking at her through the glass with so many thoughts running through my mind.
I sat down by her bedside waiting for the moment she would wake up.
Then in a moment, I heard a faint hoarse voice.
“Hello, Moon Pie”
I lifted my head and saw her looking at me with a smile on her face.
I was so happy and relieved at the same time to see that bright smile again.
“Oh Grandma Joyce,” I almost burst out in tears while holding her warm hands.
“I made you worried right?” she asked in a low and weak tone.
“No, what's more important is to see you get better and come back home,”
“Oh Moon Pie, I am sorry I made you worried for nothing,” she said apologetically.
“So how was the interview?” she asked with so much expectation.
“I got the call that you had collapsed before it got to my turn so I rushed out without having my interview”
“Oh Moon Pie, you shouldn't have worried about me or at least finished your interview before coming. You know how important this is for you.”
“As you can see I am fine, you can go back and see if you can still be interviewed.”
“But Grandma Joyce….” she hushed me before I could finish my statement.
“You can go, I will be fine” she edged me on.
As I stood up to go and try my luck because I knew better than to argue with her, the nurse came in.
“We need to take her for tests now,” she said while looking at me.
I just couldn't leave anymore without hearing the results because my heart was already in my throat, praying to whoever was listening that it shouldn't be anything serious and that she could go home today.
“The test result is out and we now have a diagnosis, can we discuss this in my office?” the doctor said in a serious tone.
I was rooted to the ground, I could see the serious expression on his face, I didn't want to listen to whatever he wanted to say because I could sense a foreboding of something terrible.
