CHAPTER3

The day started like a normal day and it seems that everything is going as planned. Although it seemed like that, something happened that changed everything. Sitting in the doctor's office seemed like I was seated on hot iron. “She has cancer,” he dropped the bombshell. It felt like a boulder was dropped on me and crashed me into nothingness. I wished for the ground to open up and swallow my very existence. It was like I had trouble with my hearing, “what did you just say doctor?” “She has cancer” he repeated himself while looking at me softly. I was covered in sweat immediately, I felt suffocated, the muscles around my heart constricted and it was like I was going to pass out anytime. “Are you okay?” he asked worriedly. I just nodded my head and I felt disassociated from my body. “Surgery would have been the best option but she is too old for that. With her age the surgery success rate is low because it will take a toll on her body to recover from such complicated surgery” he continued. I could hardly hear what he was saying again because it was like time stopped for me at that very moment. “Can you hear me, Miss Selina?” he asked while raising his brows and staring at me. That brought me back. “Yes, I can. If she can't have surgery what is the next course of action?” I asked dejectedly. “We will have to take a more conservative approach but it's not going to be easy and she will have to be at the hospital for a long time and that would cost a lot of money,” he responded. “I don't care how much it will cost, just make sure she is well taken care of and she gets better. I can do anything for her.” almost on the verge of tears as I choked on my words and almost kneeled for the doctor to please save her life. I knew from that moment everything had changed. I do not have anybody to ask for money or rely on. I have to work this out myself. I have to look for every means to care for her and the hospital bills. Make enough money to transfer her to a bigger hospital where they have a better system to accommodate her and treat her better. Grandma Joyce is the next person to a family that I have, even though we are not blood-related. She was my nanny and had taken special care of me since birth and even after my mother's death. She is the only one who has given me familial love and care, not even my biological father. So it's my turn to do the taking care of and I will do it with every fibre of my being. I will go to the moon and back for her. Without her, I have no backbone or confidant. I strengthened my resolve to do anything to foot the bills. I went back to Grandma Joyce's ward and gave her the biggest smile I could ever give. But she could see that it was just a facade. “What would you like to eat or drink so I can go get them for you or make them for you whichever you prefer?” looking expectantly at her while waiting for her response. “I am fine Moon Pie, don't you worry about me, the nurses will take good care of me.” looking at me with those tender aged eyes. “Don’t worry I will take care of you and do anything in my power to make you better, no matter what it takes. Just put your trust in me and focus on your treatment and recovery,” I said with a smile on my face while holding her warm hands and looking into her aged brown eyes. She just looked at me and smiled without saying anything. “I need to leave now and start looking for alternative jobs so I can take care of you,” I stood up, planted a kiss on her forehead, and waved goodbye to her. I went to see the doctor in his office to discuss in detail the treatment she would undergo, the cost, and the plan of care afterward. After leaving his office I went to see the nurse to inform her of my departure and that she should take good care of Grandma Joyce. With all that set in place, I am ready to go and make a way to make this work out because I can't imagine life without Grandma Joyce. As I trudged down the hospital ward to the reception, the smell of the hospital brought back memories of my mother. Tears threatened to spill from my eyes. With my face down and heavy steps lost in thought, I almost bumped into someone again before I caught myself just in time and I was shocked when I lifted my eyes to see the person. What!!! Not again!! Standing before me is a man in a blue suit, with a properly carved face and well-gelled brown hair and yes he was the one I bumped into at J & E Empire. I didn't take notice of his well-carved face when we first “bumped met” in the lobby of the company. Damn, he is looking good. Just looking good?! No scratch that he is hot!!! He smells good too. No, I can't be caught drooling, I quickly organized my thoughts and felt embarrassed immediately for almost bumping into him again. “Oh, I am so sorry,” I said embarrassedly and shyly. “It's okay. Well, we meet again, if not fate tell me what are the odds of seeing each other twice in a day under similar circumstances in different locations,” he responded with his million-dollar smile and perfect dentition. It was like I should just disappear into the ground from the embarrassment. “Oh yeah, what are the odds?” I responded with a nervous smile. “Anyways, I am sorry once again.” I apologized and couldn't wait to hurriedly leave. “Oh, it's no problem. Nice to meet you. My name is E…..” I bolted out before he could finish his sentence. “Oh not again,” exasperatedly he threw his hands in the air while taking my curvaceous body in slowly as I sped off.
