The Scent Of Her
The Blackfang border wasn't a place people wandered into by accident.
There were no roads, no trails, and no signs pointing the way. Just miles of thick forest and old stone markers that most people were smart enough to avoid.
Kael Ashwood knew every inch of it.
He was on his usual patrol when he caught movement ahead.
A woman.
She stood in the middle of the clearing with a backpack hanging off one shoulder, staring at a folded map like it had personally offended her.
Kael frowned.
How had she gotten this far?
He stepped out from between the trees.
"You're trespassing."
The woman looked up.
"Oh."
That was it.
No scream.
No panic.
Just... oh.
"You scared me," she said, folding the map. "You really should make more noise when you walk."
Kael stared at her.
Most people froze the second they felt his presence. His wolf alone was enough to make humans run.
She looked mildly annoyed.
"I didn't know anyone lived out here."
"You crossed three border markers."
"I thought they were old ruins."
"They're warnings."
"They could use better wording."
For a second, Kael honestly didn't know what to say.
Then the wind shifted.
Her scent reached him.
Everything inside him went still.
His wolf, usually quiet and controlled, exploded to life.
Mate.
The word echoed through his mind so hard it almost hurt.
No.
That wasn't possible.
Not after all these years.
He took a slow breath, but it only made things worse.
Rain.
Wildflowers.
Something warm he couldn't quite place.
It settled deep in his chest until he couldn't think about anything else.
She noticed him staring.
"...Are you okay?"
Kael realized he'd stepped closer.
He hadn't even meant to.
"What?"
"I asked if you were okay."
He ignored the question.
"What's your name?"
She hesitated.
"Why?"
"Your name."
There was something in his voice — low, insistent, almost physical — that pulled at her before she could stop it. She felt herself wanting to answer, and hated that she didn't know why.
"...Elara," she said, frowning at herself the second it was out.
The name hit him harder than the scent had.
His wolf practically growled with satisfaction.
Found her.
Kael closed his eyes for half a second.
This couldn't be happening.
He'd spent years convincing himself he didn't have a mate. That maybe the Moon Goddess had forgotten him.
Apparently, she hadn't.
When he looked at Elara again, she was watching him carefully.
"You look like you're about to pass out."
He took a slow breath, but it didn't really help him calm down.
Every instinct in him was screaming the same thing.
Don't let her leave.
Elara shifted a little under his stare, clearly uncomfortable.
"…Is something wrong?"
He didn't answer.
His wolf was practically clawing at the edge of his control, pushing him to close the distance between them, to make sure she couldn't just disappear.
He'd spent years learning how to control himself.
And in a matter of seconds, she'd completely undone it.
"You need to come with me," he said.
She frowned.
"I don't even know who you are."
"My name is Kael Ashwood."
The color drained from her face as recognition flickered in her eyes.
"The Alpha King…"
He stepped closer again.
"You shouldn't have crossed into my territory."
"I didn't know—"
"It doesn't matter."
His voice stayed calm, but there was something dangerous underneath it now.
"You're under my protection until I say otherwise."
Her eyes widened.
"I think I'll take my chances."
She turned.
She only made it two steps.
Kael caught her wrist.
Not hard. Not enough to hurt.
Just enough to stop her.
She froze.
His grip tightened slightly as another wave of her scent hit him.
His wolf gave a low, satisfied growl.
For a long moment, neither of them said anything.
Then Kael met her eyes.
"You're not leaving."
No anger in his voice.
No threat.
Just total certainty.
And somehow, that made it even more unsettling.
