Chapter 1
The sun shone brilliantly. The birds were chirping happily, as if they were singing a song. The fragrance of pine and spring flowers was strong in the air. It was summer today. It's the perfect season for picnics and coffee dates. You wouldn't think for a second if it was going to rain, after all, the weather was perfect.
I was wearing a plain lavender dress and a pair of black boots. My mother made my hair into twin braids, which she suggested, because it was going to look cute on me. It would be a good impression for my boyfriend who I'm going to meet for the first time today. His name is Josh and I've met him online. Apparently, we shared the same hobbies that made us know each other. We would also call each other till dawn and exchange some corny jokes. Meeting him for the first time made me feel anxious, but at the same time excited. I have arrived at our meeting spot, which was a coffee shop.
Unfortunately, he wasn't here yet, so I had no choice but to find a seat far from other people. I messaged him through SNS that I was waiting. I've been waiting for hours but he hasn't still arrived yet. I got bored playing offline games so I decided to call him but he did not pick up. The waitress kept going back and forth, asking me if I have plans to order food.
It was humiliating...
I stared outside and noticed raindrops from the sky. I absolutely had no idea that today will rain. The weather forecast said that there's only 10% chance that it will rain this month. Luckily, I brought an umbrella with me...just in case.
Anyways, where is he?
The door swung open and there stood a guy wearing a navy blue suit. He was wearing a cap and a mask on his mouth. I was wondering if it was him, but then I saw his luxury watch. "Josh! I'm here!" I yelled and waved my hand. He turned his head to face where the voice came from. He frowned and walked to our table.
He sat down in front of me, so I called the waitress immediately to list our orders. In the meantime, he ordered a club sandwich and I ordered a vegetable salad. Obviously, I was following a strict diet that Kaye, a friend of mine, had suggested after she found my baby fats.
There was an awkward silence between us. I figured it was natural because it was the first time we saw each other. I was trying to start a conversation by asking a question, but he'd either shrug his shoulders or nod. I was getting mad.
He seemed not to be interested. He eventually opened his mouth and said, "So, what time are you going to go home?" he asked when he was on his phone. I arched my brows and stopped chewing my food. I was insulted, it was like he wanted me to leave. "Why are you asking?" I questioned, and he raised his head to look at me. "I still have other things to do."
He took a sip on his water and asked the waiter for the payment. The waiter immediately handed the bill with the receipt. He fished for his wallet in his pocket and grabbed 150 dollars. "Keep the change," the waiter nodded, bowing before he left.
I heard the ring of his phone, so I gestured to him to take the call. "Hello, hmmm? Yes, I'm going to be there in a few minutes. Wait for me, love you, "my body stiffened when I heard a woman's voice coming from the other line. She also said that I love you in return.
"Who was it? "I wondered. He rolled his eyes and sighed." A girl I've been seeing for months, "he said calmly, as if I wasn't his girlfriend." I have to go now, "visible tears began to form in my eyes. He was about to leave, but I grabbed his wrist and stood up.
"F*ck you all! "I punched him hard enough to land on the floor. His left cheek left a mark of my fist. I couldn't control my rage any longer. I was close to exploding. I took my purse and hurriedly ran away from the store.
The rain poured heavily, and the wind was so strong. Everyone used their bags to cover their heads to avoid getting wet. All of a sudden, I remember leaving my umbrella inside so I turned my head to face the glass window, but then I saw Josh talking to someone so I didn't have a choice but to run across the street, even though I'd get soaked from the rain. All the taxis were not vacant, and I had to wait for the cab to pull over so that I could go home.
When I saw the taxis line up, I had to cross the street again, so that I could get there. I didn't know why, but my gut told me to look around.
I shouldn't have trusted my guts.
I saw him with a lady, and he used my umbrella to cover themselves up. I smiled bitterly, and tears began flowing down my cheeks. My vision were blurry as the rainwater and my tears were mixed up. I sprinted across the street, and all I could hear was a loud car honking.
Time had unexpectedly started to disappear into itself, as shapeless as the rain. It was all happening in a slow motion. I was puzzled for a second before I noticed a car approaching me...
I suddenly realized that I've had a lot of time. So much time that I let it slide like useless silver coins through my fingertips. Too much of the time I saw it drain like water in a sink. So much time that I let it disappear in an act like a wizard. Too much of the time I saw it disappear like a mirage across the desert. Too much of the time I stood as it sailed over the barren horizon. And now I know that I've had a lot of time, and I've wasted it. Now I know that for some of us today may be our last tomorrow. We may never have a chance to see the sunrise again.
When I got back to my senses, I felt like I was lying on the cold ground. My bones, my joints, and my organs felt like they were compressed and broken into a tiny jar. My lungs had contracted with such intensity that I was afraid they might fold into themselves. The universe must have gone insane to keep on flickering its figurative light switch, because my vision kept flashing from bitter darkness to dazzling white light. The only sound that filled my ears were people's screams combined with the distinct crackles of my bones. Then all of a sudden, everything became black.
