Chapter 1
At 1:42 a.m., Nora Williams was already exhausted, and she just needed like 5 minutes of rest. That was all she wanted. Five quiet minutes. Her shift had stretched endlessly, four hours of back-to-back emergencies. Her legs felt heavy. Her shoulders ached beneath her scrubs. Even her thoughts felt tired. The emergency room was unusually calm for once. Machines hummed softly. Nurses spoke in low voices. For the first time that night, no one was screaming. No one was coding. She leaned against the nurse’s station and closed her eyes briefly. Not for more than 2 minutes did she close her eyes; her phone vibrated inside her pocket. She exhaled slowly and pulled it out. Mom. Three unread messages. She opened the latest one. “Nora, you are 28 already. How long will you continue like this? We just want to see you married and settled. Please think about it seriously.” Nora stared at the screen. Twenty-eight. As if it was expiration date. She almost laughed. Married to who exactly? She that barely has time for herself, let alone date. Her life revolved around saving strangers who might never remember her name. She typed nothing back. Instead, she shook her head and muttered softly to herself, “Maybe I should marry the hospital.” That was when someone began banging hard on the emergency entrance doors. The sound shattered the calm instantly, and Nora straightened. The security guard rushed to open the doors wide. “Stabbing victim!” a man shouted. “He’s losing blood!” A stretcher burst through the entrance, everything shifted, and exhaustion vanished. Training took over. “Trauma bay three!” Nora ordered, already pulling on fresh gloves. “Get IV access. Oxygen. Move!” The man on the stretcher was unconscious. Blood soaked through the sheets, dripping down the metal frame, and then they lifted him onto the hospital bed. Nora’s breath caught. It was him. Two years later, and she would recognize that face anywhere. Ethan Brooks. Even pale and barely breathing, he was unmistakable. The billionaire CEO. The man whose face dominated financial magazines. The man she once left behind on a quiet street. “BP dropping!” someone called. Focus. She stepped closer and pressed firmly against the stab wound just below his ribs. “Sir, can you hear me?” For a second, nothing. Then His hand shot out. He grabbed hers tightly. His eyes opened halfway, with pain and fear. He looked at her and said weakly “Please... “Please save me.” The words were broken. Stripped of pride. Stripped of power. Just a man who didn’t want to die. Her heart twisted. “I will,” she said firmly. “You’re not dying tonight.” His fingers tightened around her hand like she was the only thing keeping him from dying. And suddenly her mind flashed back to Two years ago. It was a rainy night, and the street looked so calm She had just finished a double shift and decided to walk home instead of taking a cab. That was when she noticed a black car parked; the engine was on. The driver’s door was slightly open. The headlights were on. Something felt wrong. She approached cautiously. And then she saw him. A man leaning weakly by the side of the car, blood staining his shirt. Her nurse instincts overpowered hesitation. “Sir?” she called softly, rushing to him. He was barely conscious. There was a stab wound beneath his ribs. Not fatal but dangerous, she removed her scarf and tore part of it, then pressed it firmly against the wound in order to slow the bleeding. “Stay with me,” she whispered. He tried to look at her face, but everything he was seeing was Dark. She told him gently. “You’re going to be okay.” She worked quickly, stabilizing the bleeding. After some minutes, the bleeding reduced, but he needed some medication to prevent infection and manage the pain. “There’s a pharmacy down the street,” she murmured. She carefully helped him sit inside the car. “I’ll be right back.” He watched her leave, but when she returned, A woman was standing beside him. Tall. Beautiful. Elegant. The woman was holding his face gently. “Ethan… stay with me.” So that was his name. Ethan. The woman looked up. Their eyes met. And Nora felt it immediately. Claim. “I’m his fiancée,” the woman said quickly. “Thank you. I’ll handle it.” No gratitude. Just possession. Nora handed over the antibiotics she bought and said, He needs to take them as instructed. The wound has been compressed, but he should still see a doctor. The woman nodded. Ethan looked dazed now, barely aware. So she left. She told herself it meant nothing. “Clear!” Nora blinked back to the present. Once. Twice. Then A steady beep returned to the monitor. He survived. Again. Three hours later, Ethan Brooks was stable in recovery. Morning light filtered softly into the room when he finally opened his eyes. He looked disoriented at first. Then aware, Then his gaze found her, standing beside his bed. You were there,” he said hoarsely. I was part of the team,” she replied calmly. He shook his head slightly. When I thought I was dying… You were holding my hand. Her pulse quickened. “You gave me a second chance,” he continued. She remained silent. To live, he added quietly. “And maybe to love.” The room felt smaller suddenly. “Have everything,” he said. “Money. Power. Influence. But when I thought I was about to die… none of it mattered.” His eyes locked onto hers. You saved me and gave me another chance to live again; the word almost made her smile. If only he knew. Then he continued, “Please marry me.” The words were calm this time. Intentionally, she stared at him. You don’t know me. Then let me. She hesitated. Her mother’s message echoed in her mind. You are 28 already. Maybe fate has its own way of doing things. If this happens, she said slowly, It will be a contract. His eyes sharpened. One year. No love. No expectations. No control over my job. After one year, we decide. He studied her. Then he nodded his head and said okay One year. He extended his hand. After a brief pause, she shook him, but Ethan did not know she was the woman who had saved him two years ago. And Nora did not know that this decision would change everything.
