Chapter 1-The girl in chains
The first thing Elena learned about the Black Moon Pack was that silence could be more frightening than screaming. The castle was never truly quiet. Somewhere beyond the stone walls, wolves were always moving. Boots struck the corridors in measured rhythms. Doors slammed. Orders were barked. Servants whispered behind half-closed doors, and every now and then, a distant howl rose from the forest surrounding the pack territory. But inside the servants’ wing, there was a different kind of silence. A careful silence. The kind people used when they were afraid that even the walls might be listening. Elena kept her head lowered as she carried the tray of food through the narrow corridor. Her wrists ached beneath the rough leather restraints wrapped around them. The chains weren’t heavy enough to stop her from walking, but they were heavy enough to remind her of what she was. Property. That was what the Black Moon Pack called girls like her. Slaves. She had heard the word so many times that it should have stopped hurting. It hadn’t. She reached the end of the corridor and stopped before the enormous wooden doors leading into the Alpha’s dining hall. Two guards stood on either side. One of them looked at her. “You are late.” Elena lowered her eyes. “Forgive me.” The guard stepped forward. “Did I ask for an excuse?” “No.” “Then move.” She tightened her fingers around the tray and walked between them. The doors opened. Warm golden light spilled over her. For a moment, Elena forgot how to breathe. The Alpha’s dining hall was nothing like the servants’ quarters. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling. Long black curtains covered the enormous windows. A polished table stretched across the center of the room, surrounded by high-backed chairs carved with the symbol of the Black Moon Pack. And at the head of that table sat the most feared wolf in the northern territories. Alpha Adrian Blackwood. Elena had never been this close to him. She had seen him before, of course. Everyone had. His portrait hung throughout the castle. His name was spoken in whispers. His victories were recited like legends. But portraits didn’t capture the way he made a room feel smaller. Adrian Blackwood wasn’t simply tall. He was imposing. Broad shoulders disappeared beneath a black shirt, his sleeves rolled to his forearms. Dark hair fell carelessly across his forehead, and a faint scar ran from the corner of his eyebrow toward his temple. His eyes were the most frightening part. Gold. Not ordinary brown. Gold. The kind of gold Elena had seen in a wolf’s eyes moments before it attacked. He was speaking to an older man seated beside him when Elena entered. Neither of them looked at her. She moved toward the table. One step. Then another. Her heart began pounding. She had been warned never to look directly at the Alpha. Never speak unless spoken to. Never stand too close. Never touch him. Never attract his attention. The last rule was the easiest to obey. She had spent years making herself invisible. Elena placed the first plate on the table. Then the second. Her fingers trembled slightly as she reached for the third. The plate slipped. It struck the edge of the table. A sharp crack echoed through the hall. Elena froze. A small piece of porcelain fell to the floor. Silence. The conversation stopped. The older man looked at her. Then Adrian did. Elena’s blood ran cold. His golden eyes settled on her face. For several seconds, neither of them moved. Something strange happened inside her chest. A sudden warmth. A pull. A sensation so unfamiliar that Elena almost stepped backward. Adrian’s expression changed. Only slightly. But she saw it. His jaw tightened. His fingers slowly curled against the armrest. “Leave,” he said. Elena immediately bowed. “Yes, Alpha.” She turned. “Not you.” She stopped. The older man looked confused. Adrian’s gaze remained fixed on her. “Everyone else.” The man beside him frowned. “Alpha, we were discussing—” “I said everyone.” Nobody argued. Chairs scraped against the floor as the men rose. Within moments, the dining hall emptied. The doors closed. Elena remained standing beside the table. Her pulse was so loud she was certain he could hear it. Adrian didn’t speak. Neither did she. Finally, he stood. Elena instinctively took a step backward. His eyes followed the movement. “What’s your name?” She swallowed. “Elena.” “Elena what?” She hesitated. She hadn’t used her surname in years. “Elena Vale.” Something flickered across his face. Recognition. It was gone so quickly that she wondered if she had imagined it. “How long have you been here?” “Six years.” “Six?” “Yes, Alpha.” “You were brought here when you were twelve.” It wasn’t a question. Elena stared at him. “Yes.” Adrian walked around the table. Every instinct in her body screamed at her to run. But there was nowhere to go. He stopped several feet away. “Who brought you?” “My father.” The answer came quietly. Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Your father?” “He owed a debt.” “What debt?” “I don’t know.” “You don’t know?” Elena shook her head. “He never told me.” Adrian studied her. There was something unsettling about the way he looked at her. Not desire. Not anger. Something else. Something she couldn’t understand. He stepped closer. Elena’s back nearly touched the wall. His gaze dropped to the restraints around her wrists. “Who put those on you?” “The guards.” “I know who put them on you.” His voice became colder. “Who ordered it?” Elena looked down. “I don’t know.” Adrian’s expression hardened. “Look at me.” She obeyed. Their eyes met. For one terrifying second, something inside Elena awakened. Her wolf. The creature she had spent years trying to suppress. It stirred beneath her skin. Mate. The word echoed inside her mind. Elena’s breath caught. No. Impossible. Her wolf whimpered. Mate. She stared at Adrian in horror. He went completely still. His nostrils flared. His pupils changed. And Elena knew. He had heard it too. The scent. The bond. The truth neither of them could deny. He was her mate. The most powerful Alpha in the northern territories was her mate. Elena’s lips parted. “Alpha…” Adrian stepped backward as if she had struck him. For the first time since she entered the room, he looked shaken. Then his face became unreadable. “Forget what happened here.” Elena blinked. “What?” “You heard me.” “But—” “Forget it.” His voice was dangerously calm. “Tell no one.” Elena stared at him. “But you’re my—” “Don’t.” The single word silenced her. Adrian turned away. Elena didn’t understand. Wasn’t finding your mate supposed to be sacred? Wasn’t it supposed to be the greatest blessing a wolf could receive? Then why did he look at her like she was the one thing in the world he desperately wanted to escape? She lowered her gaze. “Yes, Alpha.” She turned toward the door. “Elena.” She stopped. His voice had changed. She slowly looked back. Adrian stood with his back toward her. “When you leave this room, you will behave exactly as you did before.” She frowned. “What does that mean?” “It means you will remain a servant.” Her heart sank. “You will not tell anyone that you are my mate.” Elena stared at him. “And you?” He finally turned. His golden eyes were cold again. “I will pretend I never found you.” The words cut deeper than Elena expected. She looked away before he could see the hurt in her eyes. “Understood.” She reached for the door. But before she could open it, Adrian spoke again. “There is one more thing.” She waited. His gaze dropped to the chain around her wrist. “From tonight onward, no one touches you.” Elena looked at him in confusion. “Alpha?” “Not a guard. Not a servant. No one.” His voice carried the weight of an order. “If anyone lays a hand on you without my permission, they answer to me.” Elena’s heart pounded. She didn’t know what frightened her more. The fact that her Alpha wanted nothing to do with her… Or the fact that he clearly couldn’t stop watching her. She opened the door and walked out. The moment it closed behind her, Adrian’s expression shattered. He gripped the edge of the table. His claws slowly emerged. His breathing became heavier. “No.” He closed his eyes. The scent was still there. Her scent. Lavender and rain. The scent he had spent years searching for. The scent of the woman whose existence could destroy everything he had built. His mate. His hidden mate. Adrian opened his eyes. There was fear in them now. Because Elena Vale wasn’t supposed to exist. She had been dead for six years. And if she was alive… Then the people who had tried to kill her would soon come looking. Adrian looked toward the door through which she had disappeared. His jaw tightened. “Find out who sold her.” A shadow moved from the corner of the room. A man stepped forward. “Alpha?” Adrian’s eyes flashed gold. “And bring me the name of everyone who knew she survived.” The man hesitated. “Everyone?” Adrian’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Everyone.” Outside the dining hall, Elena continued down the corridor, unaware that the moment she had walked into the Alpha’s private room, the fate of the entire Black Moon Pack had changed. And somewhere deep within the castle, someone was already watching her. Someone who had been waiting six years for her to return.
