16 When he opened his eyes again, he wasn't on the stretcher, but lying in a bed. The mattress cradled him in its softness. The bed frame was expertly crafted out of thick logs. The room was sparsely furnished with the exception of bows and arrows lining one wall. A warm glow came from a room beyond. He pushed himself up, threw back the thick blankets and put his feet on the floor. The wood was smooth and cool under his bare feet. He grabbed his sneakers and listened as a door closed and heavy footsteps clomped through the house.
