*CHAPTER 1: "THE TITLE SHE STOLE"*
They expected tears.
They expected me to drop to my knees in the middle of the great hall and beg Alpha Kade to take it back.
They expected me to scream, to claw at his feet, to throw myself at the mercy of a man who had none left to give.
What they got was a smile.
A calm, cold, terrifying smile.
Because the woman they knew was already dead.
---
Five years.
Five years I bled for the Moonstone Pack.
Five years I stayed up 3 nights straight during the rogue war, hands deep in torn flesh and broken bones, pulling wolves back from death while Kade was too drunk to stand.
Five years I balanced the pack books, mediated disputes, and made sure every pup had food in winter while he was off "hunting" with his buddies.
Five years I bore his mark on my neck and called it love.
And today, on the day of the Luna Coronation, Alpha Kade of Moonstone crowned another woman.
The great hall of Moonstone Pack was packed wall to wall. Three hundred wolves. My pack. The people I healed. The people I fed. The people I protected.
They were all here to watch me be erased.
The air smelled like pine and blood and betrayal. Chandeliers of wolf bone hung from the ceiling, casting shadows that danced across the marble floor. At the far end, on a dais made of black stone, stood two thrones.
One was empty.
Mine.
Kade stood in front of it in full ceremonial Alpha robes. Deep black with silver embroidery. The Moonstone crest on his chest. He looked every inch the king.
Except his eyes were dead.
And wrapped around his arm like she belonged there was her.
Lila.
The blonde healer from the East Pack. 22 years old. Soft hands. Softer spine. The kind of woman who cried when she saw a wounded bird.
The exact opposite of me.
"Pack of Moonstone," Kade’s voice boomed through the hall, amplified by pack magic. It vibrated in my bones. "Today is a day of new beginnings."
New beginnings. Right.
"For five years, we have been without a Luna."
Lie. I’d been running this pack for five years.
"Today, that changes."
He pulled Lila forward. She curtsied, eyes downcast, cheeks pink. Like she was embarrassed to be stealing another woman’s life.
Good. She should be.
"Meet Luna Lila," Kade announced.
The crowd erupted.
"LUNA! LUNA! LUNA!"
Three hundred voices chanting her name. A name that should have been mine.
My hands stayed at my sides. No shaking. No fists. Just calm.
Kade wasn’t done.
"And this," he gestured to the small boy at Lila’s side, "is my son. His name is Lucas. Call her Mommy."
The boy was 4. Blonde curls. Big blue eyes. Kade’s eyes.
Not my son.
Her son.
The hall went silent for one second.
Then the whispers started.
"Is that his?" "With her?" "What about Aria?" "The other one?"
The other one. That’s what I was now.
My son, Eli, squeezed my hand. He’s 7. Dark hair like me. Sharp eyes like Kade. But better. Kinder.
"Mommy?" he whispered, tugging my sleeve. "Why is Daddy calling her Mommy? Is she going to be my new mommy?"
I knelt down, level with him. Brushed hair out of his face. My hands were steady.
"No, baby," I said softly. "She’s not your mommy. I am. And nothing changes that. Ever."
"But why is Daddy doing this?"
"Because he’s stupid," I said, and meant it. "And stupid people make stupid choices."
Behind us, someone gasped. Probably heard me. Good.
I stood back up. Head high. The silver dress I was wearing caught the light. I’d picked it out 6 months ago for MY coronation. Spent $400 on it. The last money I had that Kade didn’t control.
It fit perfectly. Because it was meant for me.
Kade’s eyes finally found mine across the sea of wolves.
For half a second, something flickered there. Guilt. Regret. The ghost of the boy who used to trace my scars and call them beautiful.
Then it was gone. Replaced with cold. With finality.
He looked away.
That was it.
That was the moment Aria Winters, dutiful Luna, loving mate, pack healer... died.
An elder, Gamma Tomas, cleared his throat. He’d known me since I was 12. He looked ashamed.
"Luna Aria," he said, and the title cut like a knife. "You’re dismissed. The new Luna will handle pack duties moving forward."
Dismissed.
After 5 years of service. After saving half the people in this room.
Dismissed.
I looked at Lila again. She still wouldn’t meet my eyes. Coward. She knew what she was doing. Knew exactly whose life she was stepping into.
I looked at Kade. He was staring straight ahead now, jaw tight, like if he looked at me he’d break.
And I smiled.
Not a sad smile. Not a broken smile.
A promise.
"Of course," I said, and my voice carried. Clear. Strong. Every wolf in the hall heard it. "I wouldn’t want to get in the way of true love."
More gasps.
Kade’s jaw ticked.
I turned. Took Eli’s hand.
"Come on, baby. We’re leaving."
"Where are we going, Mommy?"
"Somewhere we’re wanted," I said.
We walked.
Down the center aisle. Past 300 wolves who parted for us. Some looked away. Some watched with pity. A few had the decency to look ashamed.
No one stopped us.
Behind me, the chanting started again. "LUNA! LUNA! LUNA!"
Let them chant.
Outside, the air was cold. The moon was rising, fat and full and silver. It pulled at the wolf inside me. The one I’d spent 5 years chaining, softening, quieting so I’d be "gentle enough" to be Luna.
I let her breathe.
She snarled.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Eli asked as we reached our car. It was old. Kade’s name wasn’t on the title. Thank God for small mercies.
"I’m better than okay, baby," I said, buckling him in. "We’re free."
My phone had been buzzing nonstop since we left the hall. 89 missed calls. All from Kade.
I turned it off.
Then I drove.
Not to the pack house. Not to the home I’d shared with Kade for 5 years.
To the cabin.
The one we built when we were 19. Before he was Alpha. Before the pack. Before the politics and the betrayals and the lies.
It was on the edge of Moonstone territory. Hidden. Forgotten.
The key was still under the rock.
Inside, it smelled like dust and old memories. Eli fell asleep on the couch within minutes, clutching the wolf plushie Kade gave him when he was 3.
Traitor toy.
I sat at the kitchen table and stared at my hands.
Healer’s hands. Scarred. Strong. The right hand had a burn from pulling a pup out of a fire 2 years ago. The left had a thin white line from a rogue’s claw.
These hands had saved 200 wolves.
These hands had been thrown away like trash.
My wolf stirred. _Let me out,_ she said. _Let me hunt._
_Not yet,_ I told her. _First, we plan._
The door crashed open at 2 AM.
I was on my feet with a knife in my hand before I even saw who it was.
Kade.
He looked wrecked. Hair wild. Eyes red. Shirt untucked. Like he’d been drinking. Like he’d been fighting himself and losing.
"Aria," he breathed.
"Don’t say my name," I said, knife still in hand.
"Please. Can we talk?"
"There’s nothing to talk about. You made your choice. In front of everyone."
"I had to," he said, stepping inside and closing the door. "The council. The East Pack alliance. If I didn’t take Lila, we’d go to war. It was politics, Aria. You know that."
"I know that you lied to me," I said. "For how long? How long was she pregnant while you were in my bed?"
His face crumpled. "8 months."
8 months.
While I was nursing pack members through the flu. While I was planning our 5th anniversary.
8 months.
"Get out," I said.
"Aria—"
"GET OUT!"
He flinched. Then he left. The door didn’t slam. He closed it quietly. Like he was afraid to wake the ghost of what we had.
I didn’t cry.
Crying was for the woman who died today.
The next morning, I called Gamma Rhett. He was Kade’s second. And the only person in Moonstone who ever looked me in the eye.
"Aria?" he answered on the first ring. "Where are you? He’s losing his mind."
"Good," I said. "Let him. Is the Ironwood Pack still taking in strays?"
A long pause. "Yes. But Aria... you’re not a stray."
"I was Luna. Now I’m nothing. So I’m going where I’m wanted."
Rhett sighed. "Alpha Damian asked about you last month. Said he heard you were the best healer in the territory. Said he’d pay triple what Moonstone pays."
Damian. Alpha of Ironwood. Our rival pack. Ruthless. Unmarried. And he hated Kade with a passion that matched the moon.
Perfect.
"Send him my information," I said. "And Rhett? Don’t tell Kade where I am."
"I won’t," Rhett said quietly. "You deserve better than this, Aria."
"I know," I said. "That’s why I’m leaving."
Three days later, a black SUV pulled up to the cabin.
The driver was tall. Broad. Suit. No pack scent.
"Miss Winters?" he asked. "Alpha Damian sent me. He’d like to offer you a position. Head Healer. Housing. Security."
"Security from what?"
"From anyone who might try to hurt you," he said carefully. "Or your son."
From Kade, he meant.
I looked at Eli. He was peeking from behind the curtain.
"Tell your Alpha I accept," I said. "On one condition."
"Yes?"
"I don’t bow. I don’t kneel. I work for him. There’s a difference."
The driver’s mouth twitched. "I think Alpha Damian will like that."
The drive to Ironwood took 4 hours. Eli slept most of it.
Ironwood territory was bigger than Moonstone. Richer. The trees were taller. The air smelled cleaner.
And the pack house was a castle. Literal stone walls and iron gates.
Standing at the entrance was him.
Alpha Damian.
Black hair. Gray eyes that looked like they’d seen war. Scars across his jaw and one through his eyebrow. He wore a suit but he looked like he could kill a man with his bare hands.
He looked at me. Then at Eli. Then back at me.
"You’re the one who kept 40 wolves alive during the rogue winter," he said. No hello. "Kade threw you away for a girl who faints at the sight of blood."
"She’s pretty," I said.
Damian’s mouth curved. Not quite a smile. "Pretty doesn’t stop bleeding, Miss Winters. You do."
He stepped aside. "Welcome to Ironwood."
As I walked past him, he leaned down. His voice was low, meant only for me.
"I don’t care who you were to him. I care who you are to me. And Miss Winters?"
"What?"
"When you’re ready to make him pay... my pack is yours."
My wolf sat up and took notice.
Oh.
This was going to be interesting.
That night, in the guest quarters Damian gave us, I tucked Eli in.
"Mommy, is this our new home?" he asked.
"For now," I said, kissing his forehead. "And we’re going to be very happy here."
"Are we going to see Daddy again?"
I paused. "If he deserves to."
Eli nodded and fell asleep.
I walked to the window. The moon was high over Ironwood.
Somewhere in Moonstone, Kade was probably drinking. Probably regretting. Probably realizing what he lost.
Too late.
The woman who loved him was dead.
In her place was a warrior.
And warriors don’t beg.
They take back what’s theirs.
Even if it’s not him.
Even if it’s everything else.
